Travel to Montreal

Hey ladies, I'm a nestie from North Carolin and need some travel info help. DH and I are considering going to Montreal after Christmas and staying through the new year. Any advice/tips you can give would be appreciated. Neither one of us have ever been to Montreal. Thank you!

Re: Travel to Montreal

  • Will you be flying in or driving? If you are flying will you be renting a car? What sorts of things interest you (museums, art, sports etc)?
  • Definitely flying.  We love food, art, music, etc.  I don't think we will rent a car but will depend on cabs and public transportation.  We love to do touristy things but also go where the locals go.
  • I would recommend staying and eating in the Vieux Port and old Montreal.  Fantastic restaurants and a very picturesque part of town.  The whole place is quite tourist friendly so you should be find without a car.  There are some lovely boutique hotels in Old Montreal that are perfect for a romantic getaway!
  • We stayed at Chateau Champlain and had a fantastic time. Check out the bio dome and the Olympic park.

There is also a whole underground city with lots of shops. Its also great to get around if the weather is cold.

There are lots of museums so check those out if you are interested.

  • Check out the underground city its alot of fun and since it will be cold out it will be a break from the weather. Also if your staying downtown the metro will do you, most hotels are close to one and alot of museums, stores and restaurants are near one and of course there are taxis. If you are staying downtown (which i suspect you will be) i wouldnt rent a car, parking can be difficult and there is construction everywhere.

I hope you have a good time though, i love it here and there is always something to do!

  • If you plan to do a lot of walking, wear warm waterproof boots!?

You can't go wrong at the Musee D'Art Contemporain, not the Musee des Beaux-Arts. ?The former is smaller if you have limited time.

  • Thank you ladies!  Now I need to investigate buying boots.  They are rarely needed here in North Carolina.
  • My husband and I have both had good experiences at this jazz bar (we went separately, on business, but all good reviews), in vieux Montreal... prices are reasonable too:

I enjoy walking down Ste Catherines, and I really like the Bio Dome (bonus - it's indoors) http://www.biodome.qc.ca/

and if you're into "green" and environment stuff I also really liked the Biosphere: http://www.biosphere.ec.gc.ca/

Make sure to check out one of the "Simon's" department stores.
