What did you do ? Cleaning and preserving wedding dress

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out what to do with my wedding dress (I want to keep it).  I've been looking into cleaning and preserving and the estimates I've gotten seem to be around $250-$300.

What did you do?  Did you clean and preserve?  How much did you pay?

Just want to get some more info before I do it.

 Thanks

Re: What did you do ? Cleaning and preserving wedding dress

  • I went to a local drycleaner that also does alterations and wedding dresses. They cleaned and preserved (boxed) it for $85. It's in Toronto in an Indian shopping district so I thought they would be good with delicate/fancy fabrics. The quote was based on the length and detail of the dress. It is cathedral length but the fabric was mostly plain from the hips down. They took their time because I told them I wasn't in a rush, I think it was 3 weeks.

ETA: I didn't bother to ask about specific preserving agents, because it is not really important to me. My Mom's dress hasn't fallen apart and it was never cleaned or preserved, lol.

  • I had mine cleaned and boxed/preserved. I made sure to find a shop that used acid-free boxes and papers, and acid-free stuffing for the bodice. It was 6 years ago and I believe I paid just over $300 for cleaning and packing.
  • It's almost 1.5 years later and it's still hanging in the guest room closet! Indifferent

I wanted to get it done but can't justify the cost...I'd be interested in reading the replies! Maybe I'd be able to finally get it done...lol

  • I got mine cleaned for about $180. I gave mine away to a charity

  • I went to a local dry cleaner that my mother uses all the time. She found a coupon for a discount on wedding dress cleaning/preserving. I just took mine out a month ago to air it out (and inspect it) and I looked at the receipt. It was over $200 even with the discount.

  • 3 years later and I still have not cleaned mine.
  • Just over 2yrs later and mine is still hanging in the guest room closet not cleaned either.
  • It's been just over 2 years, and I collected it from my aunt's closet 2 weeks ago. No cleaning or preserving. I'm torn - it didn't get terribly dirty, and it's not like I'm likely to ever wear it again.
  • I cleaned and preserved mine at a drycleaning and preservation provider, locally.  It cost $150, and they beautifully displayed it in an airtight box.  I can lift a flap to see it whenever I want without destroying the seal.  They always warn you that some of the beads or fine details of the dress may be destroyed, but my dress had a lot of that and it turned out perfectly!  GL!
