Out of state Nestie with Texas Questions
Good morning.
Hi ladies. My hubby has been talking about moving to Texas for the last 2 years and I was wondering if you could suggest local periodicals so that we can get a feel for the areas, what the housing and employment situation is like. What area of Texas are you in and why do you love it?
Thanks!
sometimes all you really need in life is a pink wig.
Re: Out of state Nestie with Texas Questions
The only magazine I can think of is D Magazine. You may want to also check out the city-data.com forums.
I think D Magazine would be good or maybe the Obsverver. You could even look at the Dallas Morning News online.
I think the economical situation in TX is doing pretty good all things considered. I even saw online that San Antonio, Houston, Austin and Dallas were some cities least affected by the recession. The housing and cost of living in Dallas is incredible for the size of city it is, it is very affordable to live here. Good luck with your search, I don't think you will be disappointed at all if you move down here.
My DH and I live in the Lewisville/Flower Mound area and are happy here. It works for us and is central to our work locations. There are a lot of neat suburbs to check out-Plano, Frisco, Southlake, McKinney, Coppell etc
Abilene is not my favorite place in Texas but it's great for some. It's about a 3 hour drive from Fort Worth. What kind of area are y'all looking for?
3 hours is a lot! something with a decent job market is priority. i think h is finally done with ny (me too) and he prefers warmer weather. i would be happy to not commute 4 hours a day. and a change of scenary may do wonders to the spirit.
I feel a great need to step up and save you from the Abilene area - and I can say mean, bad things about it because I am from 'out' there.
Girl - there ain't nothing out in Abilene but tumbleweeds and dust storms - stay far away from there at all costs.
Now of course if you are in to tumbleweeds, dust storms, ranches, some cotton farming, nasty water and ugly lizards then West Texas would be your go to spot.
I think you would enjoy Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston, or San A. much better
lol. you made me chuckle. thanks!
We love Texas. It's so big, so there are so many different areas. Here are a few of my favorites:
Dallas: Trendy, Big, tons of wonderful restaurants and shops, but also a very local feel. We live in Dallas proper, but there are great suburbs. Dallas' job market is holding pretty strong. What industry are you in?
Austin: Very unique, very beautiful with hills and lakes. The slogan is "keep austin weird", and they have. It has its own personality. It is known for it's local music scene. It doesn't feel like a big city to me, even though it's the capital. The cost of living is higher in Austin than in Dallas.
Tyler: Tyler is in East Texas and is remarkably smaller than Dallas or Austin. It's beautiful because of the piney woods and lakes. The pace of life is a little slower, but it is a growing city with lots of young families. Their job market hasn't been affected as much as other cities, but because it's a smaller city, there aren't as many opportunities as in the others.
This is just my little take of my favorite Texas cities.
We live in KC now but I was born and raised in Texas so here's my rundown of places I've lived:
I was born and primarily raised in Midland, TX which is further west than Abilene and is full of dust storms and tumbleweeds. My dad was in the oil business so we moved some to other towns around Midland including Odessa, Monahans and Snyder. Monahans and Snyder are super small and probably not what you are looking for.
I went to college in Lubbock. Lubbock is a great college town and very friendly but I don't know that I'd go back there. I then lived in the DFW area for 4 years after college and loved living in the heart of Dallas most of all.
All of that said, when we move back to Texas we will probably go to the hill country outside of Austin or San Antonio simply because we love the little towns down there and we'd be close enough to a big city for shopping and whatnot.
Texas is huge and every city and area has it's own personality. You might buy a Texas Monthly magazine or order a tourist package to get an idea of everything there is.
