Hi everyone! I posted a few weeks ago about my husband and me moving to Boston.
Well, we're here now and living in an apartment in Dedham. We LOVE the area and have been busy exploring.
I did want to ask about heating bills. Coming from South Florida, this was not something we worried about. We had electric (no gas) and our bills were high May through November due to air conditioning... and low for the rest of the year. We heard so many horror stories about gas bills, and prepared ourselves for this in advance.
I know it's been a mild November, but we are actually WARM at night! Our apartment stays at a very consistent 74 - 78 degrees throughout the day/night without using any heat/air. (In fact, last night I turned on the air conditioning to bring it down a little bit!)
We got our first gas bill the other day. It was $13 for 9 days.
I was just curious if everyone else's homes/apartments are warm right now too and we should get ready to see a big change here soon. Or are we just really lucky with having a very well insulated apartment?
Re: Question about gas bills
Our bill last month was like $45. The heat has been on but hasn't had to run much since it's been pretty warm.
Our gas bills in the winter tend to average around $200/month. Our house is almost 2000 sq feet which is one reason the bill is that high. We have a programmable thermostat and we keep it on 67 when we're home and 62 when we're gone (and somewhere in the middle when we're sleeping). We had 2 months last winter where our bills were actually over $300 but we have since replaced the 50 year old windows and insulated the attic, so I don't anticipate the bills being that high again.
It sounds like your apartment is very well insulated (lucky you!) to have it be so warm right now. Your low bills are definitely a combo of that and the pretty mild November we've had. You should certainly expect it to go up as the winter progresses, but if your insulation is as good as it seems maybe it won't be too painful. Oil heating is the real nightmare, IMHO.
Glad you're enjoying your new home!
Thanks so much! We know that only time will really tell, but I was very impressed with how we haven't had to touch our heat yet.
This is new for us. It was 95 degrees two weeks ago when we left Fort Lauderdale and we still had our air conditioning cranked 24/7. Needless to say, we are LOVING this weather. Obviously it's going to get a lot colder, but so far Boston = 100; South Florida = 2.
Haha, you'll have to update us in, say, mid-January and let us know how you're feeling then
Glad you're loving it so far!
Lol, ditto this!
