Christmas Present Poll

Do you and DH usually exchange gifts, or do you buy something kind of big for the house?

We bought our house almost five years ago, and last year was the first year we exchanged gifts...all the years prior we picked out something for the house we both really wanted.  This year we have decided we need new living room furniture...we are in desperate need of leather as this little dog is super dirty!!!  So that is what we are going to search for!

Re: Christmas Present Poll

  • This is our first Christmas with the house but we did a joint gift with our first anniversary back in September.

  • While dating we exchanged gifts. We bought our house two months after we got married, so we just did a couple little things then. Last year we were doing the kitchen and DH had been laid off all fall (but got a job at Thanksgiving) so we just did little things again. This year same deal. Hopefully he will have a job by then like he did last year! But same as last year either way we aren't going crazy on gifts for each other.

  • P.S. This year we're thinking about doing stocking stuffers so that we still have something to open Christmas morning.

  • We pretty much are all set with stuff for the house. I want a new bedroom set but that is happening this year because we don't really need it. DH wanted something and already sent me a email with the website so I can just order it. He said he was getting me a surprise so I have no idea. But we usually try to set a limit.

  • Well, we finally took the plunge last night and bought an elliptical machine so we said that would be our joint gift this year since it's so pricey (but worth it for our health).  But it would still be nice to have something small to open so last night we set a $25 limit on a small gift.

In previous years we usually exchange bigger gifts.  I think we didn't go all out the first year we were in the house, but I can't remember now.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

jealous! I'm dying to get one (I've gained back half the weight I lost in my pre-wedding diet, mostly because I don't have easy access to my former housemate's elliptical since moving out), I even know exactly where to put it, but it's kind of far down our to-buy list. :(

This is the first Christmas we'll have ever been together on Christmas, so we're exchanging gifts. We tend to do big, useful gifts, though, like my iPod one year and his hand-blown glass beer mug. This year I got DH a nice wooden tray/cutting board, a cross stitch kit, and a couple Christmas ornaments, one from each trip we took this year. We're going to buy a nice rocking chair soon, maybe around Christmas, but that's more of a purchase using our wedding gift money than a Christmas gift.

I think we'll continue to give personal gifts, but maybe we'll switch our anniversary gifts to be something for both of us or the house.

  • We usually exchange gifts (and we're doing that again this year) but since our anniversary is the week after Christmas we've decided we're not going to exchange gifts for anniversaries and instead use the money to travel (even if we just go away for a night). We really like buying Christmas gifts for each other and having something to open on Christmas :)
  • We usually exchange gifts, but put a limit on how much we'll spend. Usually between $50-100, so mostly we get each other small stuff- books, stocking stuffers, movies, etc.
  • We usually exchange gifts, but he tends to get stressed out about what to get me, and ends up shopping last minute and just picking up whatever so he'll have something to give me.  I think that's kind of a waste of money and his energy, so this year I suggested we make our big trip in September be our birthday, anniversary, and Christmas gifts to each other.  That was working out great but he just asked me this weekend what I want for Christmas.  I think he feels obligated to get me something, or maybe he just wants to, I couldn't tell.
  • We usually exchange gifts..although I can't remember if we did last year or not...
  • We usually buy each other gifts, and the price range varies each year.  DH keeps hinting that he wants to buy me something big this year.  I don't know if he has something particular in mind, or is just feeling generous, but I think that we should probably go on the smaller side this year, since we're house-hunting.
  • We don't know what we're doing yet.... in the past we bought each other presents, even in our new house.  We've been using wedding money lately to furnish it, makre improvements, etc so I don't think we're going to do that this year... I know I need a new computer, but I'm not sure if thats something we're going to save towards or if DH is just going to upgrade for me for xmas.... the clock's ticking so I hope we decide soon
