Does anyone have an IUD?

What have your experiences been? I am getting one put in Nov 30th and they assured me that if I took a pain killer prior to the appointment I should be fine. I swear I've heard people say that they weren't able to drive immediately after.

Re: Does anyone have an IUD?

  • I don't, but I discussed getting one with my dr. and he assured me that I would be able to drive home afterward.

  • I have one. I got it in Feb. or March. And, pretty much it was terrible (and I consider myself to have a high pain tolerance) in terms of pain. I almost came off the table. I was screaming. Um, it sucked. I mean, they manually dialate your cervix... ya know?

I did take some advil before and I'm not sure if it really helped. I probably could have driven home, but I had DH go with me so he drove on the way back. Then I just lied in bed all day/night with a hot pad because I had cramps.

Other than that, it's been pretty good. TMI - but I had my period nonstop for about 2 or 3 months. And now it's irregular, kind of (I get it every month, but the cycle length is always different).

The pain sucks. I suggest taking DH with you. But, I consider it worth it.

  • I do - I love it! Had it about 5 yrs now!

I was able to drive home afterwards - took 3 ibuprofen and then sat in the office for a little while with a heating pads. Get yourself some of the heating pads! It was not fun for the few days after (like really bad cramps) but I was able to go out the night after (so not terrible).

I didn't have the best experience (first attempt my cervix would not open so I had to come back a month later) but hands down, it rocks and I would do it again!
