s/o angelfire's post about getting rid of people (long)

I never posted about this when it first happened. But, my 12 y/o cousin (well she was 11 at the time) was attacked by a man in her own home at the end of last summer (2008). He worked for CSX and guarded a crossing in front of their home for 3 years before the incident happened. He dropped off a kitten 2 days before and tried to lure her out with it. When he saw her mom leave to take her little brother to his grandparents, which is only about 5 minutes away, he went to the door with a bag of kitten food and she answered. She knew this man and didn't think of him as a true stranger. When she opened the door he forced his way in and groped her. He exposed himself and at that time she was able to run into the master bedroom grab the phone then run into the master bath and lock herself away.

He ended up confessing to sexual assault, sexual abuse, and some other charges. Well he recanted and things have been on going for over a year. He finally took a plea bargain and had sentencing last month, but he claimed to have stage 5 renal failure with a letter from his psychiatrist and no proof from anyone else. Therefore, instead of going to prison where he belongs, he was sent to an evaluation center for 60 days. Well, we got word yesterday that he died. Not from renal failure, but from a heart attack.

Thankfully the ordeal is now over (sorta), but it is kind of sad that my poor little cousin does not get to see legal justice brought to that sick man.

There really wasn't a point to my story. I just kind of wanted to get it all out because DH has heard it all and I don't really like to talk about that kind of stuff with my new coworkers. Thanks for letting me vent, girls!

  • Wow, that's craziness. Your poor cousin! How odd that the dude just died so randomly.

  • Yeh. It is hard to describe how I feel about it. I don't want to say I am happy that someone died, because he did have a wife and a family. But, he also ruined my little cousin's childhood and now she has to live with that forever. It has been very hard on their family. Lots of breakdowns and changes in attitudes. She is such a smart girl and now she doesn't even try in school. I really hope she snaps out of it, because I don't want her to fall back on this and use it as an excuse forever. She needs to rise above it.

  • I can imagine you're feeling a lot of contradictory things about the death. I was just going to ask how traumatized your cousin was after the attack. That's such a shame that he stole her sense of security and normalcy like that. Scumbag.

  • So, so sorry to hear about his Kaley. It's really sad and sick and disturbing that seemingly normal people are out there lurking around our children, and can be so close to our homes without us even knowing. So sorry about your cousin. Thankfully she was able to get to safety, but now she has that imprinted on her consciousness forever. It's just awful. People who do that to children are sick on many levels.
  • That's a really sad, and scary story. Thankfully, children are resilient and she will hopefully come out stronger. I have to believe that there is something really wrong mentally with people in order for them to hurt children.
