5.  When do you decorate?

6.  When do you take the decorations down?

Re: Holiday Poll

  • 1.  If you put up a tree is it real or fake? Fake - I'm too afraid the dogs will drink the water/chew on the tree if its real, but I wish I could have a real tree.

    2.  Do you decorate it with traditional ornaments you've collected over the years or do you have a color scheme/styled tree?  It started out with a style but over the past few years, we've collected a dozen or so ornaments that don't match but we still use them.

    3.  Do you hang stockings?  Yep - I really want to order new ones from Pottery Barn with our names on them though but I dont want to spend the money only to not be able to get more of them that match when we have kids.

    4.  Do you put up lights inside/outside?  A little of both, we put up simple white lights and some small lit trees along the curved sidewalk up to our house and wrap the porch column with garland.  The mantel and staircase get lights and garland inside.

    5.  When do you decorate?  Usually the day to week after Thanksgiving depending on whether we are out of town for T-day.

    6.  When do you take the decorations down? Usually the day after Xmas, or the day we get home from travelling for Xmas.  By that point, I'm sick of it and want the space back in the LR that the tree takes up.

  • This is our first married Christmas and living together, so Im super excited to start new traditions on our own!

    1.  If you put up a tree is it real or fake? Fake for now. Really wanted to do a real tree for our Christmas, but not sure that we will since our basement isnt finished off yet and thats where we wanted to put it.

    2.  Do you decorate it with traditional ornaments you've collected over the years or do you have a color scheme/styled tree?  We will decorate with ornaments we both have collected.

    3.  Do you hang stockings?  Plan to!

    4.  Do you put up lights inside/outside?  Yes it almost looks like the Griswolds. LOL

    5.  When do you decorate?  We are starting on Black Friday and will work through the weekend.

    6.  When do you take the decorations down?  Usually start to the 2nd week of January or so, and gradually work at it.

  • 1.  If you put up a tree is it real or fake? real

    2.  Do you decorate it with traditional ornaments you've collected over the years or do you have a color scheme/styled tree? last year was the first Christmas DH and I lived together, so we bought a bunch of color coordinated ornaments in a pack, but we also had a few random ornaments from over the years

    3.  Do you hang stockings? no

    4.  Do you put up lights inside/outside? We put some lights on our balcony

    5.  When do you decorate? Shortly after thanksgiving

    6.  When do you take the decorations down? After new year's is over

  • 1.  If you put up a tree is it real or fake? Fake, since we've always been gone for about a week at actual Christmas-time, but maybe real this year.

    2.  Do you decorate it with traditional ornaments you've collected over the years or do you have a color scheme/styled tree? Both.  We go with a color scheme on glass balls and ribbons, but throw our collected ones in there, too.

    3.  Do you hang stockings? My family tradition is not to hang them, they appear Christmas morning. DH and I will probably hang them this year, though, in our home since we have a fire place.

    4.  Do you put up lights inside/outside? Lights on the tree and outside.

    5.  When do you decorate? After Thanksgiving.

    6.  When do you take the decorations down? New Year's day.

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

    1.  If you put up a tree is it real or fake? Real...we even go and cut it down.  We also have a Menorah but I always forget to light the candles so it usually just sits with all the candles in it.

    2.  Do you decorate it with traditional ornaments you've collected over the years or do you have a color scheme/styled tree? We buy eachother 1 ornament a year...I wanted them to have some meaning.

    3.  Do you hang stockings? Yup we even have 1 for his brother as he lived with us

    4.  Do you put up lights inside/outside? M likes to put lights up outside. The only lights inside are on the tree.

    5.  When do you decorate? A couple weeks before the show down.

    6.  When do you take the decorations down? After New Years Day

  • I love the holidays!  Ok:

    1.  If you put up a tree is it real or fake? Real, all the way.  We recycle it after the holiday so I don't feel so bad.

    2.  Do you decorate it with traditional ornaments you've collected over the years or do you have a color scheme/styled tree? A collection of ornaments, from things I've had since I was a kid, the first ornaments I could afford when I was living on my own (from the 99cents store), ornaments my kids made for me when I was a teacher, and DH's yearly company ornament.

    3.  Do you hang stockings? Yes.  For the cats too (they each have their own).

    4.  Do you put up lights inside/outside? Yes.  Inside, they're on the tree (duh) and the mantle.  Outside, white lights around the eaves.  We also have a light-up train decoration outside (DH loves trains).  We hope to add to our collection of outdoor decorations each year.

    5.  When do you decorate? ASAP!  Seriously, usually the weekend after Thanksgiving, but since we have OOT guest this year, maybe not.  Growing up, we had to wait until after December 10th (my sister's birthday) and it just about killed me every year.

    6.  When do you take the decorations down? After New Year's.  Then I cry.

  • imagehawkilady:

     1.  If you put up a tree is it real or fake? Real!

    2.  Do you decorate it with traditional ornaments you've collected over the years or do you have a color scheme/styled tree?  Mishmash that we have collected- no color scheme. Eventually I'd love to have two trees- one more formal one that is decorated and matchy-matchy and one in a more casual living area that is more sentimental.

    3.  Do you hang stockings? Yes. Last year I had a stocking custom made for DH that matches the ones my whole family has. Ours have our name and birthday on them.

    4.  Do you put up lights inside/outside? We live in an apt. so nothing outside. I want to do a lighted garland on the mantel.

    5.  When do you decorate? Our Christmas party is Dec. 12th so it has to be done by then!

    6.  When do you take the decorations down? We have to take at least the tree down before we leave for Indonesia on 12/31.

  • 1.  If you put up a tree is it real or fake? Real. I'm obsessed with the smell of pine trees, which is why I drink gin. It is like Christmas in a cup!

    2.  Do you decorate it with traditional ornaments you've collected over the years or do you have a color scheme/styled tree? Traditional. My mum is a Christmas freak and I have boxes and boxes of ornaments from growing up. Someday I'd love to have a second tree with more "grown up" (read: no hanging macoroni) decorations, but for now, I'm cool with my taudry childhood memories.

    3.  Do you hang stockings? At my parents house - we're not lucky enough to have a mantle. I'd bet my life that my mum got us "Mr and Mrs" stockings this year. She is entirely too predictable.

    4.  Do you put up lights inside/outside? We don't have an outside. Boo. I put candles in the windows. That counts, right?

    5.  When do you decorate? My girlfriends usually come over the first Thursday of December for a few beverages and some decorating. I live in the only adult-ish apartment of my gang, so it is the only way they're able to get into the spirit. Plus, the mister is Jewish, so he's no fun to decorate with ;)

    6.  When do you take the decorations down? Most of the time I take the tree down right before New Years. I'd love to leave it up longer, but we always have guests, and space is limited in this bloody city.

  • 1. If you put up a tree is it real or fake? Real. I love my Frasier firs.

    2. Do you decorate it with traditional ornaments you've collected ove rthe years or do you have a color scheme/styled tree? We use ornaments we've collected over the years and add a couple new ones every year.

    3. Do you hang stockings? We didn't last year because we don't have a mantle. I'd like to this year, so I might have to get some of those 3g stick to the wall things.

    4. Do you put up lights inside/ouside? Our house, although I love it, has no electrical outlets on the outside of the house, so no Christmas lights for us. I keep meaning to call the electrician to see how much something like that would run, but I keep forgetting. We do put up lights inside, but only on the tree.

    5. When do you decorate? Usually the first weekend in December because we're typically out of town Thanksgiving weekend.

    6. When do you take the decorations down? New Year's Day. :-( It's always so sad.

  • 1.  If you put up a tree is it real or fake? FAKE and TEENY. There's no room in our little apartment for a real tree. I will be so excited when we have a house and can have a real christmas tree!

    2.  Do you decorate it with traditional ornaments you've collected over the years or do you have a color scheme/styled tree? A combo. We have an overall consistent look with red bows and red gold and silver balls, but i accent it with ornaments that are special to us.

    3.  Do you hang stockings? no. we have stockings, but we don't have a fireplace, or anywhere to hang them really. Good call on the 3m sticky things V, I might have to try those this year!

    4.  Do you put up lights inside/outside? sometimes I wrap our balcony

    5.  When do you decorate? usually the weekend after thanksgiving

    6.  When do you take the decorations down? i usually let it go until the end of january... i try to make it last longer (and i'm lazy)

  • 1.? If you put up a tree is it real or fake? REAL. The thought of a fake tree makes me twitch.2.? Do you decorate it with traditional ornaments you've collected over the years or do you have a color scheme/styled tree???We have a mish mosh of ornaments, but I like to make it work as an overall theme--I use lots of butterflies.3.? Do you hang stockings???Yes! Mine are already stuffed!! :) (Hawki, We have those PB ones with our names monogrammed, they offer them every year. I was able to get both my daughter's and son's made after I had mine and Danny's made and they match perfectly).4.? Do you put up lights inside/outside??We probably won't do outside lights this year since there is an excellent chance we will be moving in January. Don't want one more thing to pack up. We use a mix of white and colored lights on our tree.5.? When do you decorate???As soon as possible! It's taking every fiber in my being to not do everything now. So that said, day after Thanksgiving. I like to have the tree and everything ready by December 2, which is babygirl's bday.6.? When do you take the decorations down??My birthday is New Year's Eve so my parents always left our tree up until January 1st for me. My Husband does the same :)
  • imagehawkilady:

    1.  If you put up a tree is it real or fake? In the past, it's always been real. This year we're planning to invest in a really nice fake tree to be both environmentally and financially conscious. Oh how I love the Christmasness of a real tree, though! I may cave and come up with a "good" reason to put off the fake tree for another year.

    2.  Do you decorate it with traditional ornaments you've collected over the years or do you have a color scheme/styled tree? I love the look of a sophisticated, well-planned tree. Mike loves a family-style tree complete with rainbow lights. We compromise, I decorate while he's gone, ha! It's not much of a compromise, but I do try to keep a pretty traditional red/gold theme. He'd die if he came home to a purple and green Dr. Seuss Christmas tree, but I'd be in love! We do have un-themed, random  ornaments that we pick every year. Last year was a leg lamp in a fragile box from A Christmas Story. It even has sound effects when you open the box...love!

    3.  Do you hang stockings? Yup! We have a blast filling them too! We have to get a new one this year for Chazzy, which I'm sure will be completely different from the ones that Mike and I have. I want to find a similar stocking hook though, if I can.

    4.  Do you put up lights inside/outside? This is our first year in a house. We've always hung a few lights inside, but never outside. I'm not sure about this year, since I'd have to do it all myself with him being gone. I'll probably stick with my wreath, and maybe one or two subtle elements outside. I don't envision me spending the day on a ladder to adorn our garage in lights. It just ain't happenin'.

    5.  When do you decorate? As soon as we get our tree. Sometimes the weekend after Thanksgiving, sometimes it's mid-December before we get to it. If we had a fake tree though, we'd probably break it out on Thanksgiving Day, after dinner.

    6.  When do you take the decorations down? Usually the weekend after New Years.

  • 1.Definitely put up a real tree, and will only ever do this.  We even chop it down ourselves.

    2.  Ornaments we've collected over the years.  My parents have given me an ornament every year since birth and DH also adopted this when we started dating almost (gasp) 9 years ago...so we have quite the collection.

    3.  Sorta...we don't exactly hang them as we don't have anywhere to hang them at this point...but we do give each other a stocking.

    4.  Probably not this year...we're in a tiny little place and there isn't really anywhere to put them up inside or outside.

    5.  Weekend after Thanksgiving...I LOVE Christmas!!

    6.  Shortly after New Years.

     Good poll!!!

  • 1.  If you put up a tree is it real or fake? We always do fake... love the smell of real but they are so messy!

    2.  Do you decorate it with traditional ornaments you've collected over the years or do you have a color scheme/styled tree? We started off with a theme when David first bought our house 4 years ago, but we have added our own ornaments since then... plan to separate it into 2 trees eventually

    3.  Do you hang stockings? Yes 4 of them... ours and the two dogs! haha

    4.  Do you put up lights inside/outside? We always have lights up inside... i think this will be our first year for them outside...

    5.  When do you decorate? Usually the weekend/week after Thanksgiving

    6.  When do you take the decorations down? David usually sneaks and takes them down the week after christmas while im at work... I would rather wait until atleast a week or so after new years! David LOVES christmas time... but once the holiday is over he is ready to get our house back in order! haha
