Where do you buy your meat from?

DH & I have a new Super Kroger by our house but the last few times we have gone to get meat from there they don't have much of a selection.  The chicken is the worst to find.  BIL says to go to Meijer which we have before but I am wondering if anyone else has suggestions.  TIA

Re: Where do you buy your meat from?

  • For me, Im very picky about quality of meat.  I used to like Sam's club for meat, but the past few times I bought it it had a rotten smell :(

Right now, I buy ground sirloin from Meijer, and everything else from Costco.

  • Findley Market. I get my sausage from Kroger Brothers. Meat from Ekerlin (sp).  I get my chicken from the Amish chicken dude. I used to get my Fish from Lucken, but there is now a new place and I am testing the waters there.
  • I have really bad luck with Meijer, slightly better with Kroger.  The stuff in the open cases at any grocery store is frankly cheap stuff, the better quality meat is behind the counter.  My dad is a butcher and grocery store meat does not compare to what he (or any butcher) sells.  My best advice is to find a butcher or else go to a specialty grocery like Jungle Jims or Dorthy Lane Market (in Dayton).  I'd rather spend the money on good meat and only eat it a few times a week.

  • Kroger and a few things at Sam's.  Our Marketplace Kroger in Hebron has a good selection.  I don't buy much meat, mostly Laura's Lean ground beef and Jennie O ground turkey and I buy the frozen Kroger brand or Tyson chicken breast.

From Sam's I usually get the Jennie O turkey tenderloins already seasoned.  I buy bratts and metts from there as well as chicken sausages.

  • I use Findley Market - Busch's for steak and bacon, Eckerlin for pork, goetta, veal and others. We typically buy fish at Hyde Park Fish Market but always use Kroger as a go to.
  • I've had good luck with the individually frozen chicken breasts at Costco (sometimes they're Tyson, sometimes the Kirkland brand). The Amish chicken at bigg's is pretty good too.

DH loves to get meats from Langen (I think that's how it's spelled) on the west side when he's over there ... their ground beef and sausage are always better than anything in the grocery store. He got some pretty good bacon there recently too. I wish there were a butcher shop near us (Mason) that we liked as well..maybe there is one up here and we just don't about it? Anyone have ideas?

  • I'm very particular about my meat and where it comes from/how it was treated. We have a local butcher that we visit and occasionally we'll buy meat at Whole Foods or Fresh Market. We try to do the local thing. Like a pp said, I would rather pay a little more for good, quality cuts and eat it only once in a while.

  • Mrs Angel-there was one in West Chester, maybe on Smith Rd? It's near a spaghetti/Italian place.   Still probably a little far though.  There used to be a meat shop at route 42 & Tylersville Rd-not sure if it's still there or not.

  • we usually buy our meet from the Kroger Marketplace near our house or Butcher Bills in Mason.  Butcher Bills has awesome quality!

  • We always buy our meat from Kroger. Then again DH also works for Kroger, so he knows exactly which are the best cuts of meat. He often makes friends with the meat department at whatever store he is working.

  • The Kroger by our house has a fairly nice meat selection. Or else I buy meat from Beacon Food Mart.
  • I have family in Mason and they swear by Butcher Bills. It's in a strip mall with the UDF at the corner of Tylersville and 42.

I usually stick to Meijer and Sams and don't have any complaints. If anyone knows of a good butcher in Green Twp I'd love to hear!

  • Butcher Bill is the place I was thinking of.  I should have remembered the name b/c my dad is a butcher named Bill-but that's not his shop so I'm not advertising, ha-ha!

  • I am also SUPER finicky about meat - prep, freshness, cut, etc..  DH - not so much.  That being said, I use our local [family owned] deli/butcher shop for most of my "meat needs."  However, if I'm buying strictly for DH (as he could eat meat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner), I'll literally buy whatever is on sale at Kroger.
