Who's going shopping on black friday?

Do you normally go shopping on black friday and if so, do you think it's worth it?

Re: Who's going shopping on black friday?

  • I went briefly last year when I was visiting the IL's in MN.  Choices were pretty limited where my IL's live.

This year we'll be in the Seattle area but I don't think H or the IL's will want to go.  I wouldn't mind hitting up a few shops but I really have no idea how crazy it can get...

  • I did the early morning 3 am waiting in line one year at Kaahumanu mall, never do that again...then I went a couple years after the lines and I still found some pretty cool stuff :)  It's kinda fun getting into the spirit of things :)
  • Only once have I gone at 5:00 in the morning...I hated it!  But I did get a great deal on a playhouse for my nieces (more than 50% off).  We usually shop at some point that day, though.  My mom usually comes to visit me and my sister for Thanksgiving, and we go shopping.  It has more to do with the fact that my mom can get a better selection in Chicago than in northern Wisconsin than the deals.  If you go later in the day, it's not usually as crazy, and there's still usually deals, if stuff's not sold out.

  • No, never!  I don't do well with crowds or traffic on a regular basis, so Black Friday would surely put me over the edge.  I do check out sales on online sites like Amazon, but I've never really scored anything that great... seems like a lot of promos are very limited in stock.

My biggest $$ saving trick is to start shopping after summer and just accumulate the gifts as I see them for really good values (often cheaper than what they were sold for post-Thanksgiving anyway).

  • We did it two years in a row, but last year there didn't seem to be too many great deals.  Online, however, is another story.  Pretty sure I'll be buying a new computer this year online.  And since I'm working on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, I won't be able to go out and shop anyways.

In all honesty, I'm not sure it's really worth it to deal with all the craziness.  I don't really like dealing with crowds.  But then again, I'm also not the most frugal person and there's a limit to how far I'd go to save a few dollars.

  • My family usually goes to Fry's b/c we love electronics and you can get a lot of pretty good things for SUPER cheap or free (after rebate) even, but they line up at like 4am. I never went. I'd just meet up with them later when I wake up (after I ask them to grab me some of the stuff they thought was a good deal--since you can only purchase one per person). This year, I would've dragged MH and gone if I were feeling better and not so glued to the bed =P

  • Not me.  I don't like the crowds at all.  I'll be doing my shopping on cyber Monday instead.
  • I tried it once when I was still living in the States. Just once. I don't handle crowds of psychotic, pushy, shouty, toe-stomping people very well.
  • I do it every year!  I LOVE IT.  However, I hate crowds, mean people, etc....so by the time I get home, I'm beyond exhausted.  Last year was our longest Black Friday ever.  We started at 5am and didn't get home until 9pm.  We started in town and worked our way up to Bellevue and Seattle.  But here's the reason why.....we had just gotten married and we had like $1000 in gift cards.  So it was fun spending money/shopping for stuff we didn't have to pay for.  :)  We got some great deals and only wish this year, we had the same gift cards.  :)

I REFUSE to wait in any Best Buy line though......nothing is worth that hassle.

  • I usually go out to a couple places later in the day, when the worst of the craziness has subsided.  Mostly just to get out of the house, because by this point my mom will have driven me complely crazy (she has stayed with us every thanksgiving since 2003).  Never have done the wait in line at 5am thing - just can't handle the crowds, noise and pushiness.

And this year I get to work at Macy's on Black Friday.  Should be a ton of fun.  Um.  Right.  What was i thinking?

  • I usually don't, but I might this year.  I think I could knock out all of my stepdaughter's shopping quickly and cheaply!!!  If it'll save me from anymore shopping, it might be worth it!
  • I did for the first time last year... but we didn't get up early or anything.  I think we got up at 8am and headed to Target and then to the mall.  Most of the stuff we got was for ourselves though 'cause anything worth the effort or savings were usually the big stuff - things that we needed or were thinking to get anyway.  To actually buy presents for people was such a joke.  No great savings that's worth dealing with the crazies!  We're not going this year.  Like Lola808, I've actually started our Christmas shopping and we're almost done already!  :)
  • I've never gone and don't think I ever will.  It seems like most of the best deals are usually for toys or big ticket electronics, neither of which we need or really want.  Maybe I've seen one too many horror stories on the news about adults fighting over the last Tickle Me Elmo at the toy store on Black Friday?  I did go to a Toys R Us after work on a Black Friday and it seriously looked like a hurricane ripped through the store.  It scared me to imagine what it must have been like in the morning!

I have a friend who went a few years ago to get a Kitchenaid mixer but she went Black Friday shopping with that specific purchase in mind.  I suppose if there was something I really really wanted (like a new camera!) that was going to available for an amazingly low low LOW price on Black Friday only, then maybe I would consider risking my life.  Stick out tongue

  • Personally, I don't really like the crowds on black friday.  The deals aren't really worth the hassle.  But I do like to look for online deals.  This year, I really want a Roomba for xmas.  I'm also in the market for a new pair of boots.
  • I have gone in the past, just because I love to find good deals.  However, the deals have been no bueno for the past year or two so it's not really worth fighting the crowds.  This year I'm in Germany so I won't be able to partake in the Black Friday festivities anyways.  Looks like I'll be trying to score deals from "Cyber Monday" instead.

  • We shopped on BF the past two years.  The first year it was J's idea and I didn't want to go, but I caved.  We got up early (5am) and actually had a lot of fun!  We went to stores that don't get as crowded (like Michael's) first, and then got to the mall for the nicer stores just as it was opening.  We had specific things on a list, and by the time the crowds really swung into action there, we were done and on our way to a late breakfast.

The second year was less fun because J didn't want to get up so early, so we had some crowds to deal with and a few of the things we wanted had already sold out.  Nothing important, but it's annoying to drive around only to figure out that what you want to buy is gone!

Both years, we avoided Best Buy and Walmart like the plague.
