Weekend in Chicago - (cheap) things to do?

My husband and I are going to Chicago this weekend for a big family party, and we'll have some free time to see the city. Any recommendations for relatively inexpensive things to do? The only things we've seen before are the Navy Pier and Magnificent Mile. We definitely want to see Cloud Gate. I'm interested in the Field Museum, but I think I might have to drag my husband. Restaurant recommendations are also appreciated.

  • The Lincoln Park Zoo is always free, and they have their holiday "Zoolights" up for the season now.  If you go there, also be sure to check out the "secret" Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool nearby.  Cloud Gate (or "the bean," as we all call it!) is cool, and you can walk around the rest of Millennium Park to see more public art there as well.  Have you been to the top of the Hancock Building?  If you want to go, instead of paying the fee for the observation deck, just go to the restaurant/bar on the floor below.  You can either grab a drink at a window table or just poke your head in to see the view.  The Field Museum is great- they have a wonderful diamonds exhibit going on right now!  Would he be into the aquarium?  The new "oceanarium" there just reopened.

Unfortunately, if you come this weekend you'll just be missing the opening of the ice rinks and the Christkindlmarket :(

What part of the city will you be staying in?

  • Saturday the 21st is the Chicago Parade of Lights which might be fun (and free).   Check out magnificentmilelightsfestival.com

There are a million amazing restaurants here, kind of depends on the area of the city, budget, etc?

  • Thanks, guys. I guess we're staying in the Loop neighborhood? (That's what it says on Google Maps, anyway.) It's two blocks from Millennium Park. I would love to see that diamond exhibit, and the aquarium sounds great too. For restaurants, I guess we'd want to stay around $20 or under for an entree, and we love all different kinds of food, especially Indian.
  • Haha, I can give you a thousand Indian recs if you want :)  Close to the Loop, go to Gaylords.  It's the best traditional Indian food downtown.  If you want to venture out of the downtown area a bit for Indian food, I highly recommend visiting Devon Street.  A few miles north of the city, it's Chicago's "Little India/Pakistan" area filled with clothing stores, groceries, and fantastic restaurants.  For casual eats and "street food" type Indian there, go to Annapurna.  For a sit-down meal, Tiffin is awesome.  Back in the city, for an Indian food splurge, go to Vermilion.  It's Indian-Latin American fusion, and it is SO good.  You could always go for just a signature cocktail at the swanky bar to keep it on the cheap side!

I always recommend Quartino for inexpensive small-plates style Italian.  It's just north of the Loop, and they have a fabulous in-house salumeria.  The house wine is ridiculously cheap and tasty, and the pizza (light and fresh, NOT Chicago style!) is not to be missed.

  • Oh, and for an inexpensive but awesome lunch in the city, visit Hannah's Bretzel.  There's one right by Millennium Park, actually.  They do inventive and yummy sandwiches with high-quality organic ingredients and have some fantastic pretzel bread.  Be sure to grab a mini Vosges chocolate bar for dessert while you're there!
