Restaurant Recommendations Needed

My husband and I will be traveling to NYC Dec. 16 - 20. We would like to go out to a nice dinner one evening - can you recommend a restaurant? We are staying at the Waldorf, so I would like something around that area that would be a short walk or short cab ride. I'm open to a variety of price ranges.

TIA

Re: Restaurant Recommendations Needed

  • any cuisine?

vong (asian) and avra (greek/mediterranean) are nearby and very good

my co-worker recently raved about fishtail which would be a short cab ride

    i also like nobu 57 (asian/argentinian)

these are all swank and expensive but excellent and some have pre-theater specials that are really good

  • Cuisine - if it was just me, i would eat anything - however, my husband is more of a picky eater...so I think we need to stick with either Steak/Fish, American, or Italian.

Cheeky Wife - I really, really want to go to Nobu - but just don't think my husband would like it. So, I'll have to save that for my upcoming girls vacationBig Smile

  • i am seriously picky but will try new things, especially when i'm traveling and at a really good restaurant. if you think that your husband won't really enjoy nobu then it's definitely one to save for your girls vaca.

there's also a steakhouse on the first floor (or maybe across the street) of the waldorf called the bull & bear. smith & wollensky (more steak) is also nearby. though if you really want beef, i would head down to 12th street for the strip house. that is my favorite place for steak in the city.

  • The Waldorf is not too far from Caviar Russe (on Madison).  Google it to see the menu.

Avra is also nearby, upscale Greek/seafood.

  • My favorite fancy, special place is the Modern in MOMA.  It is very expensive, and definitely not simple food, but sooo good!  The service is amazing!
  • Great for a romantic, excellent upscale italian dinner:  Scalinatella

Also great- and more affordable:  Mediterraneo----love the carpaccio!

  • Also great and fun--any of the restaurants in Grand CEntral--couldn't ask for a cooler atmosphere!  Love:  Metrazur, Cipriani, and Michael jordans' steakhouse.  The food is great at the oyster bar, but the location is not as cool as the others.
  • Check out Becco, Rosa Mecicano and Bar Americain.
  • Check out Becco, Rosa Mexicano and Bar Americain.
  • for some seriously good steak, you also might want to consider old homestead, down on 14th st and 9th ave, right by chelsea market.  not near to where you're staying, but a fun neighborhood to explore.

or if you're daring enough to come to brooklyn (and you should be, because it's LOVELY, dammit!)  you should check out the river cafe, which has stunning views of the city skyline and an impeccable menu.
