This is crazy!!

So this is a crazy story - but also a WWYD question.

If you woke up one morning and went to check your bank account balance only to find someone (who you didn't know) had accidentally deposited a large sum of money into your account....let's just say over $25,000....would you report it to you bank?

Hahahaha

Well, that's what happened to me this morning. We found out we have an unknown 'benefactor' who generously deposited about 28K into our checking account. She must have gotten the account numbers mixed up. I've notified out bank, but got cut off when I was put on hold, so I will be going in person after work today to make sure the woman is notified so they can transfer the money. My DH googled her and she looks to be a NYU professor or writer. Perhaps it was a check for a book deal?? hahaha.

Re: This is crazy!!

  • Oh, so bitter sweet.

Our old landlord, who we really didn't like, sent our security deposit twice.  It was two months security!  sending back that second check was really painful.

  • My bank did that once too, but for a MUCH smaller amount. They figured it out themselves and removed the money. It scared me to think they can accidentally deposit your money in the wrong place.

  • It wasn't the bank's error - the woman wrote the wrong checking account number (ours) on her deposit slip.

  • and....it just got crazier. Through some more indepth google sleuthing of my own (since DH and I wanted to contact the woman to let her know of our good will, lol).

I found out the woman is indeed a writer, lives in Brooklyn with her husband and 2 kids and....lives on our street!!! She's our neighbor!! I just about fell off my chair when I saw a photo online of her.

  • Is it a writer that we might know? Geeked

that whole thing is crazy though. As much as it would kill me to do it, I would have called the bank too.
