Do you call your ILs Mom & Dad?

Re: Do you call your ILs Mom & Dad?

  • We call each others parents by their first names, when we have to. Mostly now we just use "grandma" and "grandpa".

  • No.  I call MIL by her first name and FIL I call Sir which the entire family finds hilarious.  K calls my parents by their first names.

I use grandma and grandpa a lot too. BUT, my husband informed me a while back that he thinks I should address them personally. He must have noticed that I kind of avoid it since my MIL calls herself Mom C to me (if I answer the phone)...and I would feel fine calling her mom...but I am finding it hard to take that step, I guess.

  • I generally call them Mom and Dad.  DH calls my parents Mom and Dad.  It was easy for him to do, but it took me a while.  If at all possible I don't call them anything, like when my FIL answers the phone.  He says "hello" in a funny way, so I say "hello, it's Jenn" right back to him.  Whenever I talk about them to my parents I call them by their first names.
  • No!  I call them by their first names.

I love them and respect them "like" I would my parents, but I only had one mom and dad.

  • Heck no, first names only.
  • nope.  I call my MIL by her first name.  It's strange b/c all of my aunts and uncles call the inlaws mom and dad.  I just couldn't do it.
  • Nope, I call them by their first names.  Although DH calls my parents Mama and Tata, which is what I call them.  I think it's easier for him because that's not what he calls his parents.
  • No.  Those are names of honor.
  • I call them by their first names.  I've always wondered what others call their ILs--great question!

  • Usually by their first names.  Sometimes I get around using their names.  His Dad has found it very funny that I have called DH "Honey" forever. So my FIL and I call each other "Honey" sometimes.  It's the family inside joke!  We both say to my husband, "How is Honey doing today?"
  • No, first names only.  Even thinking about calling them Mom & Dad is weird.
  • no, by first names.
  • DH calls his parents Schma and Schpa so I do too.  He calls my parents Mom and Dad.  I wouldn't feel comfortable calling his parents by their first names and I know my parents would feel bad if DH called them by theirs.

  • This is kind of funny but I don't call them anything! Haha! They (nor DH) never really told me what to call them-even when we first started dating. I try to avoid saying their names (I know thats really bad) in conversation. If I call them or something, then I use their first names. We've never had the what to call you talk.

  • No! I don't really call them anything. Is that bad??
  • No.. I call them by their first names.

  • No - I call them by their first names.  I have a mom & dad of my own, and I added ILs, not a second set of [my own] parents.  They sign things mom & dad, though (even on things just to me, like my birthday cards), which is mildly awkward.  It's a constant reminder that I'm pretty sure they wish I called them mom & dad (and felt comfortable with it).
  • My parents used first names with their in-law and so do DH and I.  Although I sometimes wish I had a different name for FIL.  DH and FIL have the same name so I find myself calling them "my Rich" and "your Rich" if I'm talking to MIL or "your dad" or "Rich's dad" when I'm talking to others.  Uber confusing sometimes.

  • I call my ILs by their first names.  My MIL really wanted me to call her mom, she told DH this, it caused a fight between me and her.  I told her I just wasn't comfortable.

  • No, I always use her name. When she e-mails me though she always signs it "mom". Or when she is talking to DH on the phone she asks to speak to her daughter.
