Anyone else in the Little Miami School District? Thoughts on the levy?
Re: Little Miami levy?
We're in the LM School district. We were disappointed that the last levy didn't pass. My stepson is in 2nd grade and already doesn't have art, music or physical ed. I'm scared for what else they will cut. I think it will devastate the district if they cancel sports, which I heard could be a possibility at some point.
I certainly voted for this past levy but I do see some of the logic on the other side, as well (the economy, poor decisions made by the district in the past, etc).
Regarding the levy they might propose in May, I'm not sure how I feel. I haven't had time to do all my research but I thought I heard they were going to try and pass a 16 mil levy or something like that which I think has no chance of passing. I also heard talk of trying to pass a levy at half that which *might* pass.
When I was growing up in another part of Warren County, Little Miami was not a well-thought of school district but in the years since, it's come a long way. It makes me really sad to think of the state having to take over.
We've been debating on which is best right now - selling our house and moving to a better school district - or waiting it out and seeing what comes in the following years.
The levy will be on the February ballot of 16.95 mil. You can go to http://www.littlemiamischools.com/financial/stories/storyReader$7 and figure out what it will cost you as a homeowner per year EXTRA. You just need to know the newly assessed property value (the auditor sent out letters recently of the new numbers for house values).
It's def scary to think about a state takeover. My daughter is in K this year with my son following next year. I'm not so worried about them not having the extras right now since they're so young, but I'm worried about what the education level will be like once they're in 5th/6th/7th grade.
I think the problem lies with the community being completely uneducated on the subject. They see a no vote = no increased taxes. But when the state takes over, the state will make us pay back the money they use to run our district AND the money they deem it will take for us to get out from under their control. Which equals raised taxes. There will be levy's on every ballot until we finally pass one even if the state takes over. The only difference is that a state takeover means the kids miss out on so much. If the community could come together and realize not only what they're doing to the kids, but also what they're doing to the value of the community, they'd realize it would be much better to pass this levy and to maintain an excellent LOCALLY CONTROLLED school district rather than have the state takeover.
It's a terrible thing. I just don't see this levy passing either, though.

Amen, sister. Even at 16.95 my husband and I will still vote for it.
Good points about why the community should vote for it. I didn't know all of that so thanks for the information.
My niece is in 4th grade at Mason and I was just talking to her about school and the things she's doing and learning and it makes me SICK to think that Conner (my stepson) might never have the chance to do even some "basic" things ... much less all that my niece gets to do.
