Creating Your Own Traditions

How many of you are creating new tradtions or looking for new traditions for you and DH to start? DH family is not traditional but he craves it from my side of the family so I thought it would be nice to start doing some traditions of our own this year for our First Christmas. Any suggestions or ideas? Is anyone else thinking about this?

Re: Creating Your Own Traditions

  • Personally, I think it's easier to start your own christmas traditions when you have kids.  We're going to be running around so much that we're still doing our previous family traditions.

The only thing we really do is go out and find a special ornament each year, and if we have time, go to the German Christmas Market downtown.

You might get some ideas, though, from the Christmas discussion thread posted today...

  • 2 years ago we started a New Years Eve tradition.  We take the kids to our city zoo to see the Christmas lights.  It's a huge deal and the zoo is DEC'D OUT for the holidays.  The kids love it and we really enjoy watching them enjoy it.

  • I created my own tradition 5 years ago.  Every year I throw an "adult" christmas party.  It is kind of like a white elephant christmas party but the gift that people bring is very adult.  Now it is not preverted...ok wait maybe a little.  But I wait to open the presents until everyone seems like they are a little buzzed.  So when the presents are opened and "fought" over....well everyone laughs so hard thier sides hurt lol.  It is a great blast and the party grows every year....people ask if they can bring more friends and etc....GREAT fun!

  • Chance,

the white elephant party sounds like a HOOT!!

  • Ever since we started living together the Mr and I have gotten a personalized ornament from the big craft show that comes to town in October. Last year I got one back dated to the first year we were together and this year I got one with our wedding date on it.

We also like to go out about a week before Christmas and go to Starbucks and then drive around and look at all the lights while playing a Christmas CD in the car. It always gets me in the spirit.
