Holding off on TTC- F*** you MetLife!

So it's no secret that I'm overweight, but nothing like throwing that in my face! I applied for Short Term disability through my employer for when I get pregnant (so I will still get a check when I'm off work after having a baby). I got a letter from MetLife today saying that due to my weight/height ratio, I'm denied.

Time to get my (fat) a** in gear!!

Re: Holding off on TTC- F*** you MetLife!

  • What!?!?!  WTF? I don't understand how that works but somehow I am not surprised either.  Geezuz that really blows.
  • What Karrey said - wtf?  I hate how our insurance works in this country.
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • Whaaaattttt? I knew there was talk about penalizing/denying people with a BMI over a certain threshold, but I didn't know companies were actually implementing it.
  • Wow...Really??? Thats just insane!
  • BOO!!!

On a related note...can someone explain the short-term disability/pregnancy/maternity leave thing for me real quick?  I knew it was an option, but I didn't know you had to apply for it before pregnancy...is this usually when you apply for it?  I feel dumb when it comes to stuff like this Huh?

  • I think that every company is different.  We automatically have STD and upon maternity leave (after any vacation or PTO is taken) std kicks in.  Our system is pretty simple so I can't help for the more complicated situations.
  • Yeah - i have no hope for getting STD b/c of my weight either.  just plan ahead with your budget and you can make the 6 weeks unpaid work out ok.  You might have to make some budget adjustments along the way - but you can make it work.

Don't let your STD coverage determine when you can start a family.  There's never going to be a perfect time.  As long as you have health coverage you can manage the rest.

    GL!

  • Hmm, I'll have to look into this.  I don't think STD at my job takes weight into account though.  A co-worker who is MUCH more overweight than I am just used it while he had surgery.

What I don't understand is how STD works with Family Medical Leave Act.  With STD you get a paycheck but with FMLA you don't.

I was explained that you are still allowed to take the unpaid leave if you want/need through FMLA but the STD is only required to pay you for the approved amount of time. We get 8 weeks so I would have 8 weeks paid through STD but am allowed by FMLA to have more time off without the fear of losing my job but it will all be unpaid.
  • Boo. Hiss. That is all.

Ok, that makes sense.  I know that if I have annual leave, I have to use that up before I start STD.  I'll get 12 weeks STD, but by the end of the 12 weeks will only be getting something like 40% of my paycheck (it tapers off over the 12 weeks).

I plan to stay at home after our first child, but I'll have to figure out if I'll do STD and then leave my job.  That might not be something you're really supposed to do, but I'd love to still get paid for those 12 weeks.
