GRE

Hey ladies...I'm getting ready to apply for grad school (library science!) and have to take the GRE's (No). Anyone have any tips/tricks/advice? I've ordered some study aids from amazon (well, DH did). Did you take classes? If so, was it worth the $$?

Re: GRE

  • No tips.  Just a comment.  A librarian?!  My MIL is a librarian.  The end.
    Matt loves Munkii!!!
  • I am supposed to be applying for grad school and taking my GRE but sadly, will have to put it on hold for another year (with the wedding and our move, etc. there is no way I will have everything done and ready to go by Feb.)...I had talked extensively with several of my undergrad professors about the GRE and each told me that taking the classes was a huge waste of money. I heard that getting the study materials (and being motivated enough to really work hard on them) was good enough. I also heard that taking a beginning math course (like a freshman class) at a community college was a great refresher because they ask you stuff that you haven't done since high school (at least I haven't). GL with it!!!
  • I downloaded study materials online for free and that was enough.  Brush up on your math skills because you can't use a calculator (at least when I took it you couldn't - not sure if it is still that way).  Otherwise, there isn't a lot you can do to prep other than researching how the exam works and figuring out strategies for the different sections.  I rocked out the analytical writing part - perfect score!!
  • I took the GRE, both subject and general.

The books from princeton review are pretty decent. ESPECIALLY for the writing. There is a super easy format to follow for the writing section, and as long as you do that, you're get an amazing score. I studied that and some of the math... like geometry... because really, who the hell remembers geometry???

  • I used the Princeton review as well.....I hate that damn test!  I mean good luck! Big Smile
  • I got the Princeton Review book and did all the exercises and sample tests. I focused really hard on the math, since that was my weak spot in high school... and I ended up doing better on the math than the verbal!

I looked at library science when I was going back to school! Are you looking at a specific program? UMD has one if I remember, don't they?

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • Eww...Munkii, really? All of the librarians I know are awesome.

Thanks everyone. I (well, DH) ordered the princeton review books based on some amazon reviews, glad they worked for you ladies, too. I'm not really worried about the writing component as much as the math - I was going to take a class at the local community college anyway since it is just down the street from our place, so I think I'll take a math!

Katie - yeah, I'm looking at UMD and CUA. Both have programs. Apparently, GW just started one also, but it is mainly online. I'm really hopeful about CUA, although UMD would be much cheaper since I'm in state. CUA's program seems a bit of a better fit for me. Since work pays off my student loans, and my undergrad loans will be paid off by next spring, I'm slightly less concerned about the $$. I'm VERY lucky to be in that situation!
