Pet owners...floor cleaning?
Do you sweep, swiffer, or vacuum your kitchen/hard wood floors?
If you have children, do you do the above daily?
Do you think it is easier to keep carpet clean or hard wood/laminate? What would you choose if you had to replace one or the other, especially if you have dogs and kids!
We need to replace our yucky carpet before R starts crawling. I don't know what would be better! We have a lab and fear what his nails would do on the floors if they were laminate, but also hate the yucky stains that cats and dogs are bound to leave!
Re: Pet owners...floor cleaning?
We have carpet in most of the house, which I think is easier to clean. We actually just got a steamer to deep-clean it because I am not sure it ever has been.
Our kitchen, hallway, 1st bathroom, and laundry room is laminate and I feel like I am cleaning that every day because of our dog and cat! The corners get so gross after just a couple of days!
We have hardwoods throughout, and Formica laminate (looks like ceramic tile) in the kitchen. With a lab and a senior citizen kitty, I'm thankful for the solid surfaces- so much easier to clean when there's a mess.
Carpets can hide dust/dirt more easily but it's still there. To clean, we do vacuum or just dustmop daily. We use a special hardwood cleaner concentrate to do a wetmop every week or so.
We have hardwoods and laminate downstairs with some area rugs and wall-to-wall carpet upstairs. I vacuum a couple times a week, mop when needed and shampoo the carpets 3-4 times a year.
I prefer the hardwoods/laminate over our carpet. It takes so much more work to get the carpet to look nice over the hardwoods/laminates. Dog and car hair gets in every little nook and cranny; it's easier to vacuum it on the hardwood/laminate than the carpet.
We have two boxers and have never had a problem with them scratching the floor, though we have older pine floors with a lot of variation in the color. It might be noticable on the a really dark solid color.
My mom got me a steam mop for Christmas. I taking advantage of how easy it easy to use and cleaning the hardwoods/laminiates more once the baby is here and becomes mobile.
I vacuum them all.. and no.. not daily.. maybe 2x a week at most..
I do think its easier to keep the hardwood/vinyl clean than carpet.. I only have area rugs, but the carpet always seems to suck in the pet fur..

We have all 3 in our current home. I hate hardwoods! In our old house the dog scratched them horrible. This house only has them on the second floor so we don't allow the dog up there (that was horrible to train). I hate cleaning them. Since hte dog doesn't go up they don't get fur, but I still to need to sweep at least once a week because the dust just shines. And then I have to orange glow them instead of just mopping. Also when we come out of the shower if we don't put socks on, you can see the suction from our feet.
I find laminate easier to clean, so like that in our other bathroom and kitchen. I still need to clean a lot, but it never looks as bad, but the fur floats around.
Carpet is by far my favorite. I like it on my bare feet, and I never worried while DS was learning to crawl about slipping, or walk falling. And vacuuming isn't too bad. Twice a week with the dog, but DH leaves crumbs around too so I'd have to do it anyway. When I'm in a home with hardwoods I always feel cold, but hte carpet gives me a warm feeling.
As a hardwood rep. I recommend this method- do NOT use a wet swiffer, orange glo, or Murphy's- they will build up and make the floors sticky-filmy- and also prevent you from being able to screen&coat the floors in the future- they require a full sand to come off. I dust-mop with a static-type duster about every other day, and then spot clean with a hardwood cleaner and microfiber cloth which I wash without any fabric softener. I find the carpets MUCH harder to clean, and will be replacing the nursery carpeting with HW before the baby is born. We're also planning on corking the basement and removing the berber so the baby will have a play room what's still cushioned but doesn't trap so much crap.
