really?

If your homeless how do you have a cell phone? Who are you calling? Where do they mail your bill? Shouldn't you be using the money you are spending on the phone for food or maybe a warm place to stay? Dear Mr. Homeless man with the cell phone no I will not be giving you money today sorry. Sorry for the vent, but that just seemed a little crazy to me. When I lived in Texas we once brought McDonalds the a homeless man and then a few hours after we were done shopping we saw the same homeless man walk to a brand new lexus and drive off. Crazy.

Re: really?

  • Yeah not suprising.  A few years ago CNN did a report on that and the average homeless person made 50k plus a year TAX FREE.  Since I saw that report I have not given to a single homeless person on a corner since.  I have helped people in other ways....sad

  • I have a real problem with homeless street beggers.  (I hope I don't get flamed)

While I understand and am sad for people that are down on their luck, there is always a McDonald's hiring.  There are too many stories of people like the OP with the lexus.

Of course, the cell phone could be a prepaid phone.  And maybe he NEEDS it to keep in touch with kids or something...or to have a return number for job offers.

  • I sure hope that he has the phone to return job offers. I dont give money anymore either.

  • im bad, if i see a homeless man with a dog i usually go buy the dog food or ask him if i can have the dog. I care far more for animals than humans

  • DH will occasionally go to McDonald's and buy a bunch of burgers and take them to the homeless park in the middle of town. He sits outside and talks with some folks while they grab a quick bite to eat. We don't typically give money. I was once with someone and we offered to buy a homeless guy some food - in fact, I think we did buy some food and the homeless person threw it down and said something to the effect of "i don't want that."

I've been told by some people to keep McDonald's gift cards on me if I'm in large cities and give those out instead of money...but seriously people!

  • Good idea with the gift cards!

With DH's job he's out all the time in communities, cities and whatnot so he gets asked for cash all the time, but it's for like the most random amounts.  He always says no, and sometimes he'll get cussed because he said no.  There are just many outlets now that help those in need, that I much rather support than the people outright begging.

  • ditto photo!  i would totally help a dog more than a man! :)  when i see anyone on the street asking for money, i try to give them food.  but once we were on our way back from dinner with leftovers that i offered a guy and he kind of sneered at it and said "what is it?"  we told him and he said "no thanks."  really?!  you're begging but you won't take free food?!  it makes me wonder sometimes.
