Name Change Woes in Ohio

I went to the Social Security office and was able to make my maiden name my second middle name, taking my husband's last name.  When I went over to the DMV and they informed me I can't change my middle name in any fashion because it would be consider identity fraud in the state of Ohio!?  So on my new license they gave me two last names separated by a space.  Which it seems like to me that having two forms of identity not matching would be more of a conflict than changing a middle name.  I don't know what to do.  Did anyone have a similar experience?

  • My co-worker has two middle names, each initial is listed.  I hyphenated my last names and really confused the guy at the DMV. He asked me how to pronounce the dash (aka hyphen!!).  I've also known people who drop their middle and use their maiden as the new middle.  You could ask a supervisor for help but they'll make you pay for a new license (grr!)

  • I changed my middle name to my maiden name at the SS office and then went to the DMV right afterward and they changed it there too.  Not sure about the identity fraud thing...maybe it just depends on the person issuing the ID?
  • I'm going to try again today, but I'm going to a different location.  This has been very troubling to me.  :-
  • Most of my friends changed their middle name to their maiden name and they had no trouble at all. If the SS office approved a name change, they cant say a darn thing about it. I would push back on them. Good luck!
  • My sister had a lot of problems changing her name so I can tell you that you can't change your first name, but you can your middle name. I just added my married name on the end of what I already had. With SS I don't know if they consider me to have 2 middle names or 2 last names. At the DMV they put both last names on my id. Which has been very useful.
