I don't know if I should cry or laugh

DH started a new job in Jan.  He was told that he wouldn't get any leave until his 1 year anniversary.  He's been working his rear off-working every Saturday, working at least 70 hours a week during the busy season, and he's always one of the highest performers at this branch (go hubby!!).  Well his branch manager just told him that he has two weeks of vacation and 3 floating holidays to use before the end of the year!  There is no way he can use all of that and he can't cash it out.  He's taking off next week which makes me happy but I'm also ticked that he won't get to use all of his leave!  We're going to try to take a two or three day trip before the end of the year.  plus maybe I can get him to do some of my chores while he's home!

Still, it's pretty good that the company gives 13 days of vacation and 5 days sick leave in the first year!

  • Helpful that he let him know now! But all you can do is laugh  Smile

At least it sounds like he's going to get some much needed time off!

  • I'm just glad that this boss insisted that he take some time off.  The old boss would have asked  him why he wasn't working harder.  Jerk!

  • Will they let him carry it over? I know most companies will let you carry atleast a few days over to use if you arent able to use it before the end of the year. Atleast he gets some time off!
  • I'm confused. When he was hired he was told he didn't have any time off, but was just told he does? Didn't they think it was odd that he hadn't taken any time off but had almost 3 weeks banked, with 6 weeks left in the year?

I agree with the pp, and he should ask if he can roll over any of the days.

At least you'll be able to spend some QT together next week. :)

  • Nope, can't roll it over.  When he was hired he was told that he'd get 5 days of vacation at his one year anniversary.  The branch manager told him that the company's policy is confusing & he's not the only one in this situation.  Why the manager didn't understand the leave policy is beyond me.  DH was supposed to go to a new employee orientation in Indy early this year-they forgot about that too and didn't reschedule it for him.  I know it sounds really half-a$$ed but it's a big national company that has great benefits & employee rewards-not sure why this is so screwed up.  Plus DH really should have insisted that they reschedule the orientation.

  • Can he take some 4 day weekends?  2 days/week between now and the end of the year + week between Christmas & New Years?

  • I would take the week between Christmas and New Year's. You would probably have to get it scheduled now...Can you legally not pay it out or rolled it over? I don't allow my employees to roll their's over, but I do pay it out whenever they want it. I actually have very few employees that take vacation.
