If you have a college degree, do you feel like you "use" it?
For example.. my undergrad was supposed to be environmental studies and SUNY SB decided not to have that degree so I went with "multidisciplinary studies" - basically liberal arts - so that was useless. My Masters is in Park & Resource Management/Environmental Education - and I totally have not been able to use it. There are just no jobs in my field really, and the ones that are seem to be low paying often without benefits, so there is no way I could take one of those jobs.
Obviously if you are a nurse, teacher, etc., you use your degree, but I'm wondering otherwise, how did your college degree "work out" for you?
Re: College degree?
I am not using my undergrad degree (History/Art History), but am going for my Masters in General Management/Museum studies so that I can get into the field I want (museum work).
I was working at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston while I was in college and would have had a job there if I had stayed after graduation, but moved back to Rochester instead. Oh well.
Oh gosh no...I got a degree in English & Textual Studies and as soon as I get pregnant I'm going to be a SAHM.
And right now I work for my dad's company as a receptionist...and I obviously could have worked here without a degree. I guess it was a pride thing. And it was important to my dad. But I'm never going to "use" it.

TTC for 1.5 years due to PCOS - we are now blessed with twin girls from the help of IUI & Injects!
I have an AA in early childhood/ liberal arts, a BA in psychology and political science and some masters classes in public admin...
I stay home- so I will kind of use the early childhood stuff but when i did work I was in fundraising/development and maybe the psych stuff helped when tryng to get people to give us donations but not so much with the overall work i did...
I have a bachelors and masters degree in psychology.. I do not use it at all, but I knew basically after my 1st year of my masters was done that I didn't want to anymore. It just wasn't what I wanted to do.
While I wish I could make more money and get benefits, I'm pretty happy with the flexibility of my current job situation.. From the time I got married I pretty much knew that I wanted to keep waitressing so I could be home with kiddos during the day.

I have a BA in Electronic Media Communications with a minor in English. It was basically journalism, which I wanted to do, plus we got to play around with the video cameras and radio equipment.
I ended up getting an internship doing public relations, and one thing led to another, and now I'm a grant writer. I guess I'm basically using the English/Communications parts of my degree - there is no 'grant writer' degree.
Unless you're going into a specific field like medicine, I really don't think it matters what your degree is in, as long as you're smart and motivated. My sister has a degree in Theater of all things, and has a great job working for a company that sends college kids on study abroad programs.

Not using mine at the moment but hope to in the coming years.
I have a BS in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Rochester and now work as an attorney, but not a patent attorney (although I worked in the field during law school). Eventually, I want to get into intellectual property litigation, patent and other, so probably will use my degree a bit but not tons. Easily could do the same work with an English degree (still kicking myself in the rear for that academic choice!)
