Moving to MA!

Hello Boston area Nesties!

We are moving to MA this summer after living in NYC for a lonnng time. I am originally from Boxford, but have not lived in the area since I was kid. I'm trying to get some info on towns with good school systems that are not ridiculously expensive (we are looking to buy under $350,000) in the Essex/Middlesex County area. It looks as though my husband will be working in Marlborough, so something near 495 would be best. We love Amesbury, but I'm afraid the commute might be too long for him.

Any suggestions would be very very very appreciated!

Thanks ladies!

Re: Moving to MA!

  • I live in Upton and love it.  Hopkinton is right next to Upton and also a very nice town.  Both are off 495 and Marlborough is not too far away.  Also, I love Berlin and Stowe, which are off 495 a little north of Marlborough.  The only way we would leave Upton would be to live in one of those towns.   Good luck!

  • Amesbury would be a really long commute. Google says about an hour, but really with traffic I'd say you'd average out to be about an hour and a half. We live near the Rt.2/495 junction and my husband also works in Marlborough and it usually takes him 25 minutes just to that area. If he's looking for an under hour commute, I'd say not to live beyond the junction with 93. But a lot of the towns along 495 are really nice.

If you sign up on ziprealty.com it will give you some stats about the towns that will be useful to you. You can also find out about the school systems on MA's website or greatschools.com. GL!

  • Can't offer any advice, but wanted to say we also just moved to the area! Welcome back, and good luck with your home-finding mission!
  • I can't offer any insight into the areas you're interested in but wanted to say good luck with the move and welcome to the board!  Feel free to ask more questions as they come up and hopefully some of us can be helpful.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • If your looking for good schools, I wouldn't go to Marlborough, I know he only works there.  I haven't heard good things about the district there.  I grew up in Mendon and it was a nice little town, not expensive.  No grocery store, but Milford is close, and you can get to 495 fairly easily through Hopkinton, and there is a drive-in movie theater :) and an actual zoo.

I sometimes just call the town Mupton though because the school is a district shcool with Upton (where my husband's from) and as far as socializing is for kids there really is no difference if you live in one town or another.  Downfall is that both towns have to approve anything for the school (or regional library that never got off the ground), and Mendon tends to be a bit cheap and Upton also asks for a lot (I just remember them complaining when class sizes approached 20 in their elementary schools and our (mendon) classes were like at 25 already, if your a teacher you know that is a huge difference).  Anyhow, the point is that you can live in either town for the same school system, and there are a lot of systems like that out in the burbs, so if you find a system you like, you can expand your options.

Do you have a realtor yet?

  • Wow! Thanks everyone! I will look in to Mendon and Upton for sure. We've met with a realtor in Andover who we really like. It's a bit early to start really looking, but I'm hoping to view a few places when I'm up around Christmas.

I really appreciate everyone's input! I'm sure I'll be back with more questions...

  • I just wanted to say hi, welcome, and that I agree - Amesbury would be a horrid commute to Marlborough.

  • Welcome!  No advice other than Amesbury would be a terrible commute.
  • Hi and welcome! I don't know the area that well yet since we just moved from NYC too about 6 months ago. Where do you live in NY? Smile
  • Hi! We are in Hudson Heights (by Fort Tryon Park and The Cloisters). We've lived in the neighborhood for about 5 years, but I've also lived in the West Villiage, the East Village, and on Wall Street. Been here 11 + years now (since college) and ready to move back home!

We are now looking into the Westford area. Anyone have any insights?

Good town, good school system, commute would probably be about 30-40 (depending on how bad traffic was that day and where in town you lived).

  • Beautiful! That is totally doable. :) Now we just have to sell our NYC apartment, find a house, find me a job, and get up there! Won't be complicated at all, right? (Please lie to me!)

  • Westford was our top pick town when we were house hunting. It ended up being just a bit too much out of our budget, but we ended up in a neighboring town instead. If you do end up there, it's a great town. Good luck with the search!

  • Thanks for the good wished! jCam, your dogs are adorable! The bigger brownish red one looks so much like our dog Riley. Mutts are the best!
