Review of "A Christmas Carol"

3.5 out of 4 stars

Let me start off by saying that I love A Christmas Carol.  It's one of those stories that I'll never get tired of.  I was really excited when I heard that Jim Carrey was going to be voicing Scrooge in the animated feature.  I'm not a Jim Carrey fan, but he does well in animated features where he has less freedom to make an ass of himself.

What I LOVED:

1) It stayed true to Dicken's original text, almost verbatim.

2) The MUSIC.  I love that they didn't shy away from Christian Christmas Carols.  So often movies tread lightly on these things, and I'm thrilled that they didn't secularize this.  The music is outstanding.

3) The visual effects are great!  I had never seen a 3-D movie in a movie theater before, so I was skeptical at first.  The whole recreation of Victorian London, the weather effects, the "flying effects..." all really cool, and serve to effectively immerse the viewers in the story.  I wonder how well this will be achieved on home television sets, or if they're releasing a non 3-D version for home use.  This fear makes me strongly encourage you to see the movie in the theater, because I feel the 3-D aspect is most of the fun.

What you need to know:

And I mean this sincerely- this is the spookiest Christmas Carol I have ever seen, especially added by the 3-D work they've done.  I wouldn't dare bring my 9 year old niece to this movie.   I read a review on this movie that hit it right on the money: they stretched the PG rating as far as it would go.  The very first scene in the movie - the very first thing you see - is the face of Jacob Marley's corpse. So please use discretion when bringing your kids.

Re: Review of "A Christmas Carol"

  • Thanks for the review. I really want to see this movie and know that DH's family has a tradition of going out for lunch and to the movies every year on the Sunday after Thanksgiving but unfortunately some of us won't be able to go and SIL is bummed about it. Maybe she and I will have to plan a girls day night out and go see it.

  • I saw it too and I was thinking the same thing about the rating.  It's pretty creepy for a kid's movie.  I mean body parts falling off and decaying is a little much for a young child.  I think parents should know about that before deciding if their kid should see it.  Otherwise I did think it was a pretty good movie.  It's amazing that like 90% of the characters were Jim Carrey and Gary Oldman.  They can do a lot with CG.
  • Beth - I highly recommend it!  I think it would be a fun girls activity!
  • Thanks for this review!  I can't wait to see it!

  • Thanks for the heads up on the spookiness of  the movie.  We took my nieces to see Wall-E awhile back and the youngest wanted to leave cause the music got too intense...she is also afraid of Disney on Ice, so I'm thinking we'll pass on this movie.

I'm excited to go, it looked good from the previews.

  • I think so too, Karen. SIL and I have a great time together which is awesome maybe we will just make night of it and add on dinner and a few drinks.
