Name Change

After you got married did you change your name right away or did you wait a little while? Did you take his last name? Thanks!

Re: Name Change

  • Took his name!! - had to change it as soon as possible because I am a teacher and wanted to start the new school year with out having to deal with name confusion!  (Although my kids from last year still call me by my maiden name)

  • I am taking his last name.  I didn't do it right away because our honeymoon was in Italy and my passport was in my maiden name so I didn't want any confusion.

I'm still in the process of changing my name, by law I now have my hubby's last name, but as an RN I still have to sign in my maiden name because I have to change my name with the board first.  So it'll be awhile before I am fully able to call myself Mrs. Hubby's Last Name.

  • Nope!  I always planned on keeping mine, even when I was 18 or 20 b/c it's part of who I am.  I feel like I'd be giving up my identity & part of what makes me ME.  I know that other women might not feel the same way and I respect that too.  I ended up  compromising with dh & hyphenating my name on our checking account & my drivers license.  I use my last name at work, on my passport, on bills, etc.  I've been at my job for 9 years, working in my field for 12, and most of what I do is over the internet.  I've had colleagues who get married or divorced and nobody knows who they are when they change their names.  DH and I don't always see eye to eye on the issue but I needed to change/not change for me, not him.  Our families think that we have the same last name and that's fine with me, I don't correct them.

  • I took my DH's last name but didn't do it right away.  We got married in September '07 and my license was going to expire that November.  I waited until November to do it and it was no big deal.  I still don't think I've fully changed my name on everything.  Every once in awhile I'll come across something in my maiden name and have to change it.  I just carry the pocket sized copy of our marriage license that the county gave us with me in case there is ever an issue.

  • I tacked H's name on the end of my 3 names. I did it fairly quickly after the wedding. I still have not changed my name on all of my accounts. For example I changed my name with my bank, but they never issued me a new debit card. Other things i just slowly change as I notice. Luckily my maiden and married name is on my id and then I also carry my marriage license. I have had no problems...I will add I sometimes forget my last name and stutter over it. Awkward, to say the least.
  • My husband actually took my last name.  My dad is big on lineage and only had girls so my husband wanted to continue our lineage.  His mom was divorced and changed her name when she got remarried and him and his dad don't get along so he didn't really have a good reason to keep his.  We get weird looks when we tell people this, but I don't really care!  Its not really common but you'd be surprised at how many guys actually do this.
  • We were married 10/24/09, and I have taken his name... I have yet to alert the SS office, and everyone else, though!

The last two weeks have been chaotic at work, b/c I'm a high school drama director and we've had rehearsals till 8pm every weeknight, and now we're on our HM.  But, my goal is to change it and have everything arranged by Christmas :)

  • I changed mine as soon as we were back from the honeymoon last May. I made sure to change my name on our bank account, mortgage, and several other bills we pay frequently.

However, just recently I have made sure my name is changed on a few credit cards and other accounts I rarely use. I'm trying to make everything consistent before the end of the year.
