BR- Advice for Congestion?
I think I'm having the congestion issues that I've heard pregnant women talk about. Do any of you who have been through this have any advice? I really don't want to take a pill but right now I'll do it as long as it's safe for the baby. Ahhh I'm going crazy here! Tips, tricks?
Re: BR- Advice for Congestion?
This was recently a question of mine! I was super congested for a few weeks, including nose bleeds, and even resorted to sleeping upright on the couch a few times.
My OB okayed Zyrtec, and I took that twice. But since it didn't relieve my symptoms completely, I stopped.
The girls on this board also recommended the neti pot, which has been much more helpful. I did it morning and night, and it took some time each day b/c I was so stuffed up, but it really did help me to breathe and helped drain the yucky stuff. Give it a try!
I had issues for most of October and eventually had to take Sudafed (get the kind behind the pharmacist's counter not off the shelf...they are different) at night to sleep (so I could breathe) and Zyrtec in the mornings (since it was allergies causing my issues). I took the pills for about a week.
My doctor approved both and assured me that if I wasn't sleeping or breathing well that would negatively affect the baby MORE than if I took the medicine. I hope she was right! Anyway, it worked! Once I got cleared I just made sure I was using my neti pot religiously, twice a day and I haven't had an issue since. But it was bad for about three weeks. Also, sleeping propped up with a humidifier helped too. Good luck.

It's like a little gravy boat that you mix warm water and salt/baking soda in and use it to rinse your sinuses. Sounds odd, but it works and is an ancient yogi practice.
I use a SinuCleanse, got it at Walgreen's. They even have Walgreen's brand saline packets (that you mix with the water) for le$$, which is a plus for me too:

Watch the video...you'll see how easy it is. And it works!

Wow, now I see how common it is for pg ladies to have this issue! My dr didn't even want to see me, he just suggested tylenol cold or sudafed. I tried the tylenold cold and I won't be taking it again. It did dry me up but my LO didn't move for the rest of the night after I took it. I started really freaking out so I used the doppler that I bought and he wasn't in his usual spots, he was really low and wasn't moving at all but his heart sounded good. He's never usually that still, esp for so long. Then this morning I woke up to him kicking again. Yay! No more meds for me!!!
I bought the netti pot and it works great when I put it in the right side (water comes out the left side just fine) but when I put it in the left side, it never comes out the right side and when I take the pot away, all the water comes back out the same nostril. I'm going to keep trying though! I'm so glad there is this option that doesn't have any potential to harm my LO! Thanks for telling me about it girls!
