Picking paint for the nursery will be the death of me

I finally got the bedding that I ordered in early October so we're eager to start the nursery.  I'm more than eager - with less than 5 weeks left and clothes in piles in the basement, no furniture and a complete blank canvas of a room, I'm getting frenzied.

So we took the bedding to Home Depot and Lowes to pick out paint.  Ever tried to pick out paint with a colour blind spouse?  Oh, excuse me, he's colour deficient, not colour blind.  He's fully aware of his "deficiency" but doesn't see how it interferes with his ability to pick a colour that complements the bedding.

It took me 20 minutes to get him to understand why all of the green colours he was picking had too strong of a blue undertone.  I literally had to hold up two different greens along with a brown chip and a blue chip and ask him "if you had to pick a colour that was most like this blue, which one would it be?".

We got a few samples are too dark - but any lighter on the chip doesn't look right.  The kicker is that the perfect colour is the colour of our guest room but he doesn't want to paint two rooms the same colour.  I have no problem with it considering the green in the guest room is paired with taupe and hot pink and G's room will be lime green and chocolate brown.

SERENITY NOW!!!!!!!!

Re: Picking paint for the nursery will be the death of me

  • Buy the same paint as the guest room - if it's the perfect green, how are you going to find a more perfect green? Just buy it and paint it while he's at work ;) (or hire painters!!)

  • actually even better... could you move the furniture out of the guest room and use it as the nursery? then you could paint another room a different colour as the guest room. Then you don't even have to paint before the baby arrives!!
  • Good idea, but the guest room is bigger and we'd like to keep it that way for now.  The first thing my nieces asked when we told them about the baby was if he was taking their room - lol.
  • Oh gosh...I hate picking paint. DH is not even allowed to pick colour tones, he's terrible at it. I'll just pick some final contenders, and just ask for his opinion.

I think if your heart is set on the green in your guest room, you should just get the same colour. If you're going to have different accent colours in each room, they will be different in the end. Maybe he just can't visualize it quite yet. It's amazing how 2 rooms painted the same colour can look so different just by all the accents, furniture, etc...you make/add to it.

Good luck! I can't believe your little Gavin is almost here!! You're PG ticker always makes me smile :)

  • LOL what a struggle!

I say go with the guest room colour - it's one you love and the accent colours will make it look totally different!

  • Tell him that if you don't paint it the green guest room colour you are going to have to paint it pink. ;)

  • choosing paint is not fun. I think the guest room green would be good.
