S/O Permanent Birth Control

I'm thinking about what gregslittlewifey said about how no doctor will perform a permanent BC operation on her because of her age.

On the one hand, I understand that it costs the health care system a good chunk of money each year to reverse these procedures, and that some people have successfully sued doctors when they changed their minds but were still unable to conceive.  That said, I really don't know how I feel about doctors making decisions about your personal reproductive choices.

I mean, if you are 100% positive that you don't want to risk getting pregnant, EVER, why should they have the ability to tell you no?  I mean seriously... what happens if, God forbid, your non-permanent BC fails? What if you're opposed, for whatever reason, to abortion?

I know a girl who is 24 with two kids.  She was married at 18, had her first kid at 20, the second at 22, and knows that she absolutely, under no circumstances, wants any more.  When she and her husband (who is 26) went in to discuss the procedure with a doctor, the doctor actually told them that he wouldn't do it because if they split up, they might want to have kids with their new partners. WTF?

Re: S/O Permanent Birth Control

  • That is something don't understand.

I wonder if it has to do with a docs religious beliefs sometimes.

I've got a friend very similar to your own Mac and she got her tubes tied at 21!! The doctor had NO problem with it whatsoever.

Then again another friends doctor absolutely refuses. She has 4 kids. I think it's time to tie those damn tubes too.

Unless there is a real medical decision against the procedure, the doc should have no say!

  • yeah i would go right now and set up an appointment if i could..i havent actually checked how it is in canada but i would bet it is the same and i have heard that im to young to know what i want :P.

I hate when doctors assume they know everything about you and do not listen to you and ignore your question...gah! i hate my doctor :P...that felt good to get that out lol

  • Our one hospital here will not do tubals because they are a 'religious' based hospital. She wanted one after kid #2 and they refused. guess what? baby #3 is on its way. I think that's crap. she's 33!
  • I just think it's nuts that I can have as many babies as I want, even if I can't take care of them, but I can't choose to eliminate the possibility of having a baby if I don't want one.

  • well duh GLW, every women has to have children. its just not natural if you don't. Confused
  • When your ute falls out and your boobs come off because of delays in Pap smears and breast cancer, you won't care about having a baby anymore.

  • There is no way this sh*t is legal.

*edit- cant you sure for a doctor refusing you your right when they have no medical reason to deny you?

I'm very curious to know if your H has tried to get a?vasectomy?and if doctors are refusing him the same way??

  • I went through this bs at 26 when I wanted my tubes tied and the Dr. refused with out consent from my husband (now ex),(needless to say, he wouldn't consent as he though I might change my mind). Umm excuse the F out of me but it's my F'n body and I alone should make the decison on what I want to do with it. I have known from the age of 17 that I never wanted kids (I won't use the H word but I will say that I very much so dislike children and try to stay away from them as much as possible). I don't feel that anybody (Dr. or spouse for that matter) has any right to tell any woman what to do with her body. Sorry if I've been rambeling but it's a very sore subject for me. I'm just glad that I have a like minded dh when it comes to this subject.

  • Yea I get if you're 15 years old, but how the hell does a doctor tell a full grown woman she needs consent from someone else to make this decision. ?I don't know how I would control myself from ripping out the doctors throat.

  • Yeah, my docs told me they wouldn't do this on me until I had a gaggle of kids.

Now I am only 23 but I have a bunch of medical problems and will be in a sh!tload of pain if I get KU. Birth control pills obviously just contribute more hormones to the already messed up mix that is my body so H and I rely on condoms. Fun stuff.

I think the docs should shove it and let me do whatever I want with my body.

  • It's a liability, and doctors have the right to refuse to do a procedure that they feel could put them in legal jeopardy.  Unfortunately it's the world we live in, but a doctor could perform a tubal on a woman informing her that it's permanent and she could actually go back and sue him later saying she was too young to make a huge decision, she didn't realize it was permanent, etc.  It sounds ridiculous but doctors can be sued for just about anything these days.  The younger someone is, the more likely they are to change their mind.
  • well if you can sue a doctor for not being able to?conceive?because you were too stupid to know permanent means permanent. then you should be able to sue a doctor for an unwanted pregnancy because they refused to perform a procedure that you have every right to.
