I'm a huge dork and like to write everything in my planner. It helps me plan for it mentally and financially! Have we set a date for our next GTG?
Re: 2010 GTG
Hm... Guessing summer wouldn't be good, either? for hurricanes...
Just tossing out another thought.
this site has the calendar of events if we want to toss some ideas around. it also has ALL sorts of other info for those that have never been or those that have but may want to check out some extras...

i have it up on the september date but the whole site is full of info.
Same here. Dh and I really want to visit New Orleans, but until he is retested for allergies and treated, he doesn't want to go and he wants us to go together (which is understandable). He said he cant come without being retested bc the seafood is what it's all about.
I'm just curious what being tested for seafood allergies has to do with going to NOLA?
A big part of Nola is the food. Dh doesn't want to go until he can eat there. He is allergic to seafood and peanuts and has a really difficult time trusting new places. His doctor told him his seafood allergy wasn't as bad the last time he was tested but still to stay away. HE should grow out of it with time. Also, he's going to start the shots for peanuts that will make him no longer allergic. Once he does this, he will be able to eat a lot more places - he won't eat peanuts, but he won't be scared of cross contamination or anything.
Even if he doesn't grow out of the allergy, he will not be able to eat until he gets his peanut shots and is past that allergy.
^^ 2 years ago DH came in contact with peanuts twice sending him to the hospital. After that he had a breakdown with food and basically stopped eating. At first it wasn't terrible but as time passed, he wouldn't even eat food he used to always have (even if he cooked it himself). He dropped over 60 lbs and weighed barely 130 -- he looked like death. He's gotten better with time, but he still can only eat at chains if he eats out. So he wants to wait at least until he's passed that so he can eat at local joints.
Another thing I'm curious on, and again, this is just curiosity, I've never heard of a shot that makes you no longer allergic to peanuts. Wouldn't everyone who is allergic to them get it then as standard procedure if there is indeed one because I do know that the allergy can be a dangerous one so I would think most people with it would get it.
Nevermind......enjoy NOLA when he gets over the allergies.
It is a fabulous place even if you don't eat the entire time.
It's new and in testing which is why he hasn't done it yet. It is slowly giving you doses of the peanut protein to make your body build an immunity. Having a peanut allergy means your body recognizing the protein of the peanut as an intruder (i.e. tape worm) and your body attacks itself this killing itself in sever cases which DH's is.
He used to not eat, you are not misunderstanding. He became anorexic out of fear of dying from the food. He does eat now but mostly only homecooked. He will eat at chains bc he can trust them. Some chains do use peanut oil (like Chic-Fil-A) and we do not eat there. But chains like Olive Garden which he ate at before the attack, he now feels comfortable with bc he knows they have no peanuts and chains don't vary ingrediants like that. Although a local restaraunt should know what they cook with, he just doesn't trust them yet, especially since many times a person doesn't think of all the ways peanut could be in a dish -- flour, oil, or legumes(like peas, beans, etc)
He is allergic to both peanuts and seafood. He must be over his peanut allergy before we travel (anywhere where cuisine is a feature of the area). He would like to be over his seafood allergy before traveling to Nola or other places known for their seafood, but that is something that may not happen.
I think we decided DHs are invited. We're definitely planning on going, we'l make it our vacation of the year. We'll know more as the date gets closer.
Should we start a poll for exact dates, or wait a couple of months??
Let's get through the holidays before we start planning dates. If that is ok with everyone else. Unless of course E just cant contain herself if we don't pick something NOW.
I agree, let's wait for a couple of months and then we'll start planning more in detail!
Erin - Just pencil us in for the whole month
J and I were just talking about this the other night.
If we bring Scarlett, we're planning on Amtrak-ing it. It's a 2-day trip each way. J doesn't want to bring her on a plane. (He's super uncomfortable with her screaming bothering other people in a confined space.
) If she says with grandma(s), then we'll fly. He wanted to drive, but I dropped the O He11 No.
We're also planning on coming a few days to a week early so that we can explore on our own. Then I'll do "Fembot" things with you all while he watches the baby or does his own thing.
So far, I'm open for all of October, so whatever's clever. I just need to start setting funds aside.
Of course...if we buy a house...this might derail our plan financially. We'll see. I am 96% set on going.
nom nom
(yet oddly phallic)
Ok, jumping in late, but here goes:
We probably won't make it b/c Dh's 25th HS reunion is next year, and we'll probably use our vacation time for that.
Somebody has to drink for me-those grenades look AWESOME.
hudy - I have 3 allergic kids. My son is allergic to anything that grows, might grow, or has grown previously. However, he still travels places and eats out. You have to be careful, but you can't live in a bubble. And it's my understanding that IF you are going to "grow out" of an allergy, you do so by the time you reach adulthood. I'm not saying this to be snarky, but if your DH has issues with food that are that severe, you should be carrying an epi pen and he probably needs to see a therapist. By no means am I an expert, but there is no way I would curtail my life to the extent that you are because of food issues.
1) I am totally in for NOLA, October is awesome as long as its not the 27th. (My mom's bday and I never miss spending time with her on that day.)
2) Did we decide if we are bringing spouses or not? DH doesn't like NOLA much and really doesn't want me going without him. I'm sure he would relax after he realizes I won't be freaking alone, but still. I'm considering leaving Bebe with my parents so DH and I can come to NOLA together.
Alright soooooooo penciling you guys in for the entire month of October. LOL.
DH's are optional, bring them if you want.
Hudy - my DH has deadly seafood allergies (both fish and shellfish) and he's been to NOLA twice. You just tell the waiters and they prepare it separately and make it clear that he's not just being annoying. And we carry an epi.
Hope to see as many of you guys as possible!
