Oh, and I need Christmas tree advice..

I've decided I want a real Christmas tree after all.. I haven't had one since I lived at my parents house and they always took care of the tree. So, what kind of things do I need to know about having a real tree? I know I need to keep it watered but I'm sure there are other things, aren't there?

Re: Oh, and I need Christmas tree advice..

  • I love having a real tree. I did it for the first year ever last year and I plan to do it again. The one big thing I noticed (aside from watering it every day) was that the needles get everywhere so a tree skirt is essential!

Also if you have a cat, make sure the water is covered well or the cat will try to drink it. Mine does! She even figured out how to get under the tree skirt so we have to tape it to the carpet!

    Enjoy the smell!

  • My parents always watered ours with room temp "sugar water". I have no idea why, but I've continued doing it with my own trees for the past 3 years. Fill a pitcher or watering can and add about a half cup of sugar, stir it up, and water your tree. I think it helps the needles stay put or something.

Definitely measure your tree stand & the trunk of the tree before bringing it home! We had that disaster last year...

    Hope that helps! Good luck!

  • Make sure you cut about an inch off the bottom before you bring it home.  The place where you buy it from may already do that.  It helps the tree absorb the water.  And with watering just make sure that the water never gets below the bottom.  I can't wait to cut down our tree!  Enjoy!

  • I've heard the sugar water thing before but never done it. Other than the obvious (keep it watered) put a trashbag under your tree skirt. Put it down before you bring the tree inside, and put the stand on top of it. Then put the tree skirt on. If there are any spills hopefully the bag will stop most of it from getting on your floor (unless you have a crazy ass spill hahaha).

  • Ooo, I like the trash bag advice.

Other than keeping it watered, there really isn't anything else you have to do.  We usually have to water ours twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.  I've heard that adding a can of Sprite to the water makes the tree last longer (the sugar helps I guess), but I've never tried it.  The tree seems fine with just plain old water.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Definitely make sure you have a bag under it, whether it be a trash bag or one of the special tree bags... last year was our first xmas where we got one, and OMG, the trail of needles through the house just getting it out the door after the holidays was ridiculous...I'm still finding them here and there a year later.   I am make sure there's a bag under our tree this year, believe you me...
  • Depending on the size, you'll definitely want the trash bag to pull up it when the season is all said and done.  and put around the stand before you put the tree in.  I actually try to have the empty stand and bag all set before we go out to get the tree, otherwise DH can be a little impatient carrying in the tree and get ancy while I set it up (possible because I'm also yelling don't but the tree down on the carpet!, have a plastic bag on the trunk if you need to rest it down anywhere so you don't get sap on the floor).  Take a good size cut off the bottom so that the tree can drink, and I usually start with hot water for the first pour, helps the branches come down faster so you can decorate it sooner.  Then don't let it go dry, cause then the bottom will dry out and won't suck up the water (sugar water!, with a little bleach if you don't have pets) efficiently.
