Calgary girls- please help out a US girl :)

So my husbands brother married a canadian and they live up in Calgary. We don't see them every Christmas, and it gets costly shipping gifts up to them. This year I thought we would get them a gift certificate or something like that to a place up there. That way, the place could just mail the gift certificate right to them.

So... I need some suggestions on good places, maybe for dinner, or dessert, maybe a show, or concert, or spa... I am really open to any ideas! We will probably spend $50-$75. Thanks ladies!

  • restaurants in Calgary are expensive so they would probably really appreciate that. How about Earl's? mmnnn Earl's... http://www.earls.ca/
  • Earl's is good... but if you want to really treat them get them a gift certificate from the River Cafe....  75$ would cover or make a good dent in brunch depending on wether or not they order drinks.  It's a lovely place and a very nice outing as you have to walk over to the restaurant.  The restuarant will also mail the GC straight to them.... so that makes it easy.

  • See I prefer Ceasar's over the River Cafe.  Ceasar's is a steak house, River Cafe is more game type food.

I've heard good things about Hotel Arts, a coworker loves to go to Capo when someone else pays :)

Riverside Spa is nice, http://www.riversidespa.ca/ , we have a work function there every year.

  • Shows you can check Alberta Theatre Projects www.atplive.com

The Jubilee, Max Bell Theatre are other venues but I can't think of whether or not someone is associated with them.

This brings in Broadway shoes every once in awhile

July Cirque du Soleil sometimes come through town.

Stagewest is usually one of the better dinner theatres

  • Oh!  One more thought, the Calgary Tower.  Honestly it's not the best restaurant in town but the view is hard to beat.  That's why most people go, but it is a bit pricey so it tends to be a treat.
  • As a poster above mentioned Cesar's is great....  the downtown location is awesome... really old fashioned and classic.... but I've never gotten out of there for 75 bucks.

And the only place I've been to in Calgary tower is the Ruth's Chris....  which I'd bypass, but as the pervious poster said the one at the top is supposed to be decent... and the view would be awesome!

  • The Wildwood is the best restaurant in town in my opinion.  River cafe is great but as they are in a park they close in the winter (I am not sure the dates).  Plus they have a brew pub in the basement so if they could choose between spending it on a more formal or casual night.  The food is terrific up or down.

The tower would be fun actually, I don't know any locals that ever go there.  I haven't been to Ruth's Chris but I thought it was supposed to be good?  It's a US chain isn't it?

  • Man I've only been gone from Calgary 3 months and I'd already forgotten about Wildwood.  When I used to come from Ottawa to visit my then boyfriend now hubby we'd always do dinner there.  It is fantastic!

  • I'm from the states but have been in Calgary a little over a year - hubby and I LOVE food and have tried a couple of good spots:

I would definitely second River Cafe! They close in January but are open the rest of the year, and would probably be quite cozy in winter :)

Another restaurant we love is Farm - a wine, cheese and high-end appies type place and $75 could probably get two people a few plates to share and a glass of wine.

I haven't tried Capo, but have heard from our foodie friends that it's by far the best Calgary restaurant - however $75 might only cover one person!!

And if they like Indian food, I'm also a big fan of Mango Shiva, which is a sort of trendy spot downtown with a great atmosphere and awesome food - and not too expensive.

Shopping's not great here, aside from a few small boutiques, but maybe you could do a gift card for Market Mall, which is one of the better ones.

If they're outdoorsy or do yoga, Lulu Lemon has great stuff (and is definitely popular and beloved among Canadians!)

  • Thanks ladies! These will be very helpful... I will check them all out!
