Supposed to happen? re: PG & sleep

For the last few weeks I?ve been having a really hard time getting a full nights rest. Sleep

Last night for example:

Bed at 10:20 ~ I woke up at 1:00 to use the bathroom then again at 2:45 to drink water (I?ve been very thirsty too) fine, those I can understand as they go hand-in-hand. ~ But then I suddenly get BAD heartburn at 4:12 which woke me up, took Tums and went back to bed but I couldn?t fall sleep for another ? hr. ~ DH woke up to go to work at 5:30 and I was up again for no reason and couldn?t get to sleep right away? ~ (My alarm is set for 8:15 ? my girlfriend [with a baby] decided it was ok to call me at 7:45, normally I wouldn?t care but not when I finally got to sleep!!!)

I?ve been stressed at work + everything DH does pisses me off (because it?s all wrong or bad) + not getting enough sleep = DANGER!

Is this a ?part of pregnancy? that I should just get used to? or should I mention it to my OB? Some girls on 3rd Trimester say to just take Benadryl - but I don?t want to resort to taking ?drugs? to sleep if I can help it!

Is this a ?normal-suck it up? thing?

TIA!

  • It's normal to have sleep issues.  Mention it to your OB but for the issues that woke you up there is not much you can do.  I suffered from insomnia when I was pregnant with DS and it was terrible.

I am getting a little more sleep with this one but not a lot.  Sorry you are having a rough time.

  • Thanks hun...how are you feeling?  Any better?

  • Unfortunately, this was pretty typical for me, near the end of pregnancy.  The heartburn was the worst of it.  Are you taking your mat leave soon?  Maybe you can get some naps in during the day.
  • It is only going to get worse...

That's what I was afraid of...

  • I'll sympathsize with you. haha.

I'm already having trouble sleeping many nights. I previously used to sleep 9-10hrs so it's taking a big toll on me! And DH too, so sometimes I move rooms so that he can rest.

I either have cramping or I'm thirsty or I have to go to the bathroom or I just can't get comfortable. I was always a back or stomach sleeper and am having a hard time getting a hang of this sleeping on your side business. If I try to sleep on my stomach now, I instantly need to throw up. If I sleep on my back, I have to pee 10x more for some reason plus that's when I can feel baby move so of course I have to stay awake just to enjoy that. :)

As for your heartburn, since you said it's really bad, you could talk to your OB about that. Mine said if I start to get it, it's treatable. At least try to eliminate the factors you can control. I'm also not one to resort to taking drugs to sleep.

  • Gah...sorry the nest posted before I was done typing ::shakes fist::

I would recommend getting a hot water bottle or one of those things you heat in the microwave, A535, a body pillow and a white noise machine. They are going to help you down the road when the pain and sleep issues get worse.

For now I would try to sleep whenever you can.

  • Danielle - are you having leg cramps? Try eating a banana a bit before you go to bed.
  • Jen...I have occasionally had leg cramps, though not often so it hasn't been much of an issue yet...mostly just cramps in my stomach but since it's quickly growing, I assume it's just stretching. I eat bananas every day anyhow, but thanks for the tip!...I'll try eating one closer to before bedtime.

Fever is gone and so it's just back to the discomforts of the end of pregnancy.  At least I know that it won't last forever..... right Tongue Tied

  • I am having sleep problems too.  I too am a stomach sleeper, and I hate my side.  If I sleep on my right side, I get really bad gas, when I am on my left side, the baby starts kicking like crazy.  Added in to my mix is a 15 month old who suddenly can't sleep through the night, and a DH who doesn't wake up when said child is screaming.  I am averaging 5 hours a night.

  • I say get used to it.  For the last few months of pregnancy I couldn't get to sleep before 4am, sometimes 6.  I was actually tired and went to bed at 10pm the night before I had austin, only to be up with contractions as of 2 am.
