Cooking Turkeys for Ronald McDonald House!

Okay, I've gotten myself into it this time... My National Honor Society is doing dinner at RMH on Saturday night (of course it's Thanksgiving style). Most of the food was donated so I was able to only have to donate about $30 myself and we're feeding around 125 people.

The dilemma? Almost all of the turkeys were donated FROZEN at school today, and I've been thawing a most in my classroom today and now at home. Since barely anyone is going to donate them cooked on Saturday afternoon, I now have to cook TEN turkeys in the next two days.....

I need to stop being so charitable.

Re: Cooking Turkeys for Ronald McDonald House!

  • oh my! 10 turkeys?!! ALONE?!
  • Sadly, yes. I've got the three small ones in the oven now. The rest are big enough they'll have to be cooked one at a time, unless I can find two roasting pans that can hold a big turkey yet fit side-by-side in my oven... They've all got to be sliced down, too. Ugh.

  • Doesn't RMH usually let you use their kitchen to prep the food?  If I remember correctly they have a pretty nicely equipped industrial kitchen.  Maybe get up extra early and prep some of the birds down there?
  • Yeah, but you can only go in two hours before. Also, I can't imagine cutting off slices of turkey for all those people while they are going through the line, so it's easier to cut it in advance, and to transport it as well. Thanks for the suggestion though! We are making everything else there.
  • Ah, I wish I would have seen this post earlier.  I have a large rotissarie that cooks a turkey in just 2-3 hours I would have loaned you or helped.  Hope it all worked out ok.
  • Thanks for the offer, Tiffy!

It worked out great. Apparently I have a great oven - two turkeys in side by side in separate roasting pans only takes about 4 hours :-)

The day was perfect and the students loved visiting with the families and helping out. It was worth all the work, even if there is no way I'll eat turkey for a long, long time lol.
