Hi Ladies:
This is my first post here.. wondering if you could help me out. We just moved to Abq from Detroit about 6 months ago... we were thinking about heading up to Taos for our first anniversary (Labor Day) and maybe stay in a B&B, check out the town, etc since we've never been there. Do any of you ladies have any recommendations on things to do/see, places to stay, restaurants, etc? TIA!
Re: Anniversary in Taos
I would recommend staying in Taos Ski Valley which is very cute and romantic. It is just north of Taos on the way to the ski area. There are many bed and breakfasts, cute shops, etc. Old Town is a must see, also very cute. The Adobe Bar is a nice place to stop in and have drinks although they have a restaurant, it is on the pricey side. It is right in Taos. If it's nice enough I would HIGHLY recommend rafting or kayaking down the Rio Grande. If you are adventerous, this is a must. I would recommend Los Rios Runners. Regardless of where you go or where you stay, I hope you have a great time; Taos is my favorite place to go in New Mexico. Happy Anniversary!
Welcome to NM!
It makes me sick to admit it, but I've never been to Taos (and yes, I've lived here my entire life) so I have no suggestions for you. We need Flame to come answer you...I'm telling you, that woman knows EVERYTHING about the state. No joke.

Why Duff, you made me blush! Thanks for the compliment!
First, welcome to NM and to ABQ!
Taos is one of my favorite places. You can get a pretty good mix of activities - cultural, outdoors, good food, arts, etc.
Taos Ski valley is fun - it's like a bit of the barvarian Alps were put down in the middle of NM. In the summer, they run the chairlifts and you can mountain bike down the ski sloes or just go hiking amongst the wildflowers. Check to see if they have one of the wine tastings scheduled for that weekend - those are a lot of fun. They also have a great chamber music series in the summer - I'm not sure it's still going on by Labor day, though.
For more outdoors stuff, the 3 Rivers Recreation area and Brazos Cliffs have phenomenal hiking. And the lodge in Brazos has a great menu for ost hiking pig-outs. I second rafting the Taos Box - lots of fun and a great day activity. You're also not to far from Abiqui and Ghost Ranch (if you're an O'Keefe or DH Lawrence fan).
Taos Pueblo is a great half-day trip (or full day if they have a festival open to the public).
I'm a fan of El Prado just outside town, There are some cute botiques and galleries. The Rio Grande Gorge is a great engineering feat and you can stop on your way to the Earthshis on the west side of the river along US64. they offer free tours that are a hoot.
For food, the Stakeot, Josephs and Apple Tree are my favorites. DH loves the pizza joint that's in the old gas station.
The Millicent Rogers Musuem and Harwood Museum are great. If they have the Fechin Inn open it's also a cool stop.

Hi Ladies:
Just wanted to let you know that our trip was great! We stayed at a great B&B about a block from the plaza (Casa Benavides). It was small enough to give you the B&B feel, but big enough where you weren't forced to all sit around one table if you didn't want to. Cute rooms.. yummy breakfast
) We were going to eat at Josephs or Graham's for our 'nice' dinner out but they were pretty full with reservations, so we found another restaurant - De La Tierra in the El Monte Sagrado - and it was really good. Got some ice cream at the Taos Cow and did stop in the Adobe for some drinks.. thanks for the recommendation.. it was a nice place to end the evening.. they had flamenco dancers that night.
Unfortunately the weather wasn't cooperating so we mainly just drove around and went to the shops in town and El Prado. We definitely want to go back to try a few more restaurants and try rafting! Thanks again!
Casa Benavides is a great place. Glad you enjoyed your trip!
Mmmmm... Taos Cow. I've been known to drive to Taos JUST for Taos Cow.....
