hmm...big baby?

So we went for the growth ultrasound today at 33 weeks and our little bundle of joy is already a whopping 6 lbs!  They say baby should put on 1/2 lb a week until he/she is born so that would make this kid 9.5-10 lbs...yikes.

Anyone else have experience with this?  For those who are expecting right now, how big are your babies?  TIA!

Re: hmm...big baby?

  • My daughter was 6lbs and 3ozs at when I gave birth to her at 35 weeks. They told me if I went full term I would of had a 9.5lbs baby for sure.

  • When I was 41w they did a growth u/s and told me that he was measuring small (like a typical 38.5w baby). Needless to say when he was born he was 8lbs 8oz.

I don't think the growth u/s are that accurate. I wouldn't worry about it :)

  • I measured ahead for my whole pregnancy.  My last u/s was a growth one (done 4 days before she was born.  we schedualed the c/s right after the last u/s) and it was only 2 oz off.  But my experience is not typical.  They can be way off.  Kriz_b was told that her baby was a nice normal size just before she had an 11lbs baby.

Also babies can have growth spurts and then slow down again.  So anything can happen.  At my 30 weeks u/s when I was measuring so far ahead they decided to keep a close eye on size and I had u/s every couple of weeks after that.  Your doctor might decide to keep a close eye on you if he/she is worried.

  • At my last U/S at 32 weeks, baby was measuring 4.9 pounds. I was told by my MFM that he would be between 7-8 pounds at birth.

I'm not so sure about the growth spurt comment above though.  The baby's growth should be rather consistent.  I have frequent U/Ss because of complications and the one thing they look for is consistent growth and that he's on the same curve.  If the curve starts to drop or not go up, they get concerned.

Let me clarify this.   Sorry.  My doctors told me about the growth spurt thing.  It was at an appointment where it seemed like my belly grew to gynormous proportions in a short period of time, I had had consistent weight gain (small amounts) and gained a ton really fast.  Doctor told me that it was just a growth spurt and that it was nothing to be concerned about.  He then told me that he would keep an eye on it and if it kept at that rapid pace then he would be concerned.  Next appointment I was back to normal.  And considering I was measuring 6 weeks ahead from about 20 weeks they were keeping a close eye on everything.

  • I had an ultra sound at 33.5 weeks and they said my baby was 5 lbs 8 oz, which is right at the 50th percentile I was told.

I've also been told that my baby will likely be 8-9 lbs (DH and I are both tall, and I was a supa big baby myself), so we'll see...

I don't know how accurate it is.... will have to wait another few weeks to find out!

  • I think I have the big baby award for this board...lol.  3 weeks before my due date I had an ultrasound and DS measured 6lbs.  He was born 11lbs 7oz, only one day after my due date.  I wouldn't worry too much about the size given to you at an ultrasound.  as you can see mine definately wasn't correct.
