We're possibly looking to move to Rochester in the Spring. I grew up more towards Syracuse so I'm not as familiar with the surrounding areas of Rochester. I'm trying to get some initial searching done online and get an idea of COL, primarily rent and utilities for the area.
Depending on where all the circumstances fall we may be looking at needing to pay for our mortgage here, plus rent there for a while. What sounds reasonable for trying to find an apartment around the Rochester area? What towns are reasonably priced, but still good safe areas to live?
FWIW, DH is considering taking a job in Buffalo; but ultimately we'd be heading more east bound in the Finger Lakes on a long term basis. That's why we're considering Rochester as a good middle ground. Sorry if this doesn't make sense, I'm leaving a lot of details out so not to bore you with too much info.
ETA: We're only looking for something to get us by. A small two bdrm and utilities is fine. What's a good price range for that?
Re: Good reasonably priced apartments in Rochester area
I used to live at Elmwood Manor (http://www.elmwoodmanor.net/), which was a great location.
Around the corner from where I live now is Rustic Village (http://www.rusticvillageapartments.com/) which is huge and a bit more pricey, but very well maintained and has lots of features (a gym, pool, library, etc.)
If you know what towns you're looking at, I might be able to recommend some more.
We are in an apartment in Spencerport. My husband did all the apartment hunting because I was still in Ohio. He is working in Greece, so he looked at apartments nearby. He liked ours the best for the price. We have a lot of "extras" in our rent because we're on a short-term lease, we have a pet fee, and we had to get a garage since everything from our house wouldn't fit in the apartment. Sounds fun, huh? Anyway, we're at about $1000 rent for a two bedroom. If you want more info from me, just let me know.
