If you ever have the chance to go for Thanksgiving, it is a good time to go. It was not crowded. The weather was great, with the exception of rain on 2 of the 10 days. One day was on the north shore, so it may not have been raining in Waikiki. It rained on our last day, which I'm sure was the island's way of easing our pain of leaving such a perfect place. The rest of the time was gorgeous 74-85 degrees, some all sunny days and a few with clouds and rainbows.
North shore had HUGE waves, which were amazing. They have several surf competitions each year that run from the end of November through the beginning of December. We enjoyed seeing that level of surfing.
We saw an octopus! I've never seen one in the ocean... only aquariums.
I found a charity that let me feel like I actually did something. We give to many charities, but I never feel like the amount is enough to make progress. This one is for flip-flops! You know a donation can buy lots of those! It also made me feel good because I know how much my daughter likes to get new shoes... I'm sure the recipients will be appreciative.
Our hotel delivered the newspaper every day. I read this article about local kids who didn't have shoes...
We donated through the website www.slippah.org which allowed us to use paypal. I thought I should share in case any of you like the idea as much as I do.
We noticed several tents at Waimanalo Bay Recreation Area (not the Waimanalo that usually has several homeless people)... closer to Bellows. I don't know if they were camping or homeless. We joked when we got married at Waimanalo Bay that we could camp there for our wedding night. I'm curious - do many people camp on the beach who are not homeless?
We saw weddings every day at Waimanalo and 2 at the Waikiki Marriott. Anyone know the brides? Any knotties?
There were lots of little surprises this trip - fireworks and a Christmas parade. Overall, a great trip.
We go to Oahu every time. It is starting to feel like home. We have to try another island. Any suggestions? We love swimming at the beach, so that's a high priority.
Re: Oahu trip report
Sounds like a great trip! and that charity sounds like a great organization too.
as for a new island...I love the Big Island. (though it is Hawaii, all of the islands are pretty fantastic!) I think there is just so much to do on the Big Island. I love snorekelling around Capt Cook & Kona.
Glad you had a great time!!
I have only been to Maui and Kauai and LOVED both for different reasons since they are so different. Both great beaches to swim and snorkel
I know what you mean about Oahau being your second home, we feel the same about Maui....April will be our 4th time going in 5 years!

Welcome back! I'd recommend Kauai next. It's our favorite island, but of course, each and every one is beautiful in its own way.
Re: Waimanalo. Near Bellows, there is a standard camping site, and lots of people legitimately camp there. We camp at Bellows every year -- if you have a military connection, you can camp on the base, in cabins or tents, but if you don't, you can camp with a permit in the area just before the secured entrance. I think most of the homeless tents are closer to Waimanalo Beach Park.
Congratulations! I hope my husband isn't in the background of your pictures in his red Speedo. Joking, joking. The 21st is the day we flew in... so we probably missed your wedding. Although I recognize the courtyard in your siggy pic. I wish I had known! I'm a photographer and would have done a free TTD or fun beachy honeymoon pics for you.
I hope your wedding was perfect. Everything sure seemed nice there.
