speaking of gifts...

I wanted to start something kind of silly/fun for Hanukah this year, that we can keep doing when we have kids and hopefully ends up being a tradition in our family. The idea is that each night is a different themed gift night.  I've put themes on 6 days so far:

1. socks/underwear/pajamas

2.  book

3.  something homemade

4.  anything edible (candy, bake something, go out to eat)

5.  lottery tickets (my dad dreamed up a game of dreidel played with lottery tickets)

6.  a "real gift" (as ive said before, this is something we think they other would like, but usually around $25)

so I'm missing "themes" for 2 of the days... any thoughts?

Re: speaking of gifts...

  • "Newsworthy" theme: relates  to a news story from the past year. Include a copy of the story that inspired the gift.

    (stolen from Mr. Google)

  • Alphabet theme. Pick a letter each year and well... obviously.

  • Entertainment night... tickets to a theater, blockbuster gift card, tickets to a local play or art show, new cd, concert tickets, etc.

  • Ugh I would love to do that. Sadly, I don't think Y is that creative.

    referring to the newsworthy one.

  • Or I guess it could be game night and then it could include board games, tickets to a sporting event, sports equipment, etc.
  • I don't know how this necessarily fits any theme, although perhaps you could tweak it to fit you guys, but every year in my family there are a couple of gifts that go back and forth -- they get gifted, saved for a year, and then regifted. There are two that have been in the family for as long as I can remember: ice trays and a statue of Joseph from a dollar store nativity set. The ice trays you can keep and buy new ones if you prefer. The Joseph statue, my youngest sister bought me as a Christmas gift with her allowance when she was 5. I also got a half-eaten piece of rock candy and 67 cents that year wrapped in a shirt box from my other sister, who was 6 at the time.
  • If you really want to do something nice, you could do a charity night and donate the gift value to a local charity or go volunteer at a homeless shelter or something
  • BTW... sorry for monopolizing your post but I love this idea... sorta makes me wish I was Jewish so DH and I could celebrate Hanakuh (I should probably learn to spell that first...)
  • haha hawki I was about to post that I love all your ideas, you should be Jewish!  And don't worry, there are about 8 million ways to spell it and I use all of them - I was trying to find the original email i sent to my husband with the days and their themes, and i had to do like 5 searches in gmail to figure out which spelling I used.

i think i should just replace "big gift" night with "67 cents and a piece of rock candy" night.  I love it!

  • What about a music-themed night?  Could be a CD, iTunes gift card, tickets to a cheap local show or a crazy musical instrument (my dad is particularly fond of the nose flute).

Also, what about health and hygiene?  For a girl this could be makeup, but one of my favorite Christmas presents every year when I was a kid was the new Christmas-themed toothbrush I would get in my stocking every year.  Men could get cologne or nice shaving supplies.

  • What about a travel night?  It could be anything from beach towels to passport holders to a travel book for a dream vacation.  Or something that reminds you of a favorite vacation.

I guess you could do the same with any shared/broad hobby:  crafts, reading, exercise, cooking...

  • dandy, don't forget that it was half eaten rock candy.

The travel idea sounds perfect for you guys!

  • I love the travel idea!

And the 67 cents and half eaten rock candy is effing hilarious, C!

I'm friends with everybody in this office. We're all best friends - I love everybody here. But sometimes your best friends start coming into work late, and start having dentist appointments that aren't dentist appointments. And that's when it is nice to let them know that you can beat them up.
  • ooh thanks guys!! i think i like the charity, travel, and entertainment ideas... I may have to replace one of the other days since I only had 2 open!

Maybe for the charity one we can make a yearly donation of dog toys, food, etc, to the animal shelter where we got Ikey-doodle-pants face (his nickname of the moment).

PS, as a f/u to the last time I got a bunch of ideas from y'all -- we had our sex and the city party which was so cute (pics in blog).  There were a lot of sexy samantha panties, boring miranda underwear, and a lot of plaid from charlotte (and someone stole the floppy hat idea!).  Oh, and apparently Kristin Davis has a line of lingerie at Belk, which worked out perfectly :)

  • I've been trying to come up with budget-friendly gift ideas and I think half-eaten rock candy is the winner! My family will love me this year. But damn I'm gonna hafta eat a lot of halves of rock candy.

I LOVE this idea and I think I want to do it too.

I think you should make the socks/underwear/pajamas category more broad so that it's clothing/accessories. Also, to incorporate a lot of the ideas from everyone, "interests" night (yes, I stole it from the FB profile field).

Maybe also a "work-related" night? Something you guys would use at work. And for kids that could include school supplies? ('Cause what kid doesn't want to get school supplies for Januqa? Fine, it's a bad idea.)

You've been chained to your th*sis for too long.

  • I LOLed once I completed the 5 minute process of figuring out WTF januqa was.

ps... thesis test? Does the nest block it out?

  • Zee now considers it a dirty word.  I was being supportive.

  • oops, sorry zee.

I thought of another one, in case anyone else wants to play -- As Seen on TV night. MUST HAVE THE OBAMA PLATE.

  • Ha ha Stephriz! Thank you for the support and you're probably right that my sanity is slipping away.

Dandy - one year my college roommate and I threw a Hanukah party and every time we mentioned the holiday, we'd use a different spelling. That's one the "Spanish" spellings we came up with.

I think you should also consider purchasing the slap chop because the name of that cracks me up.

What about household accessories night? It can be a picture or a vase or sheets.

    Health Night: gym memberships/weights/workout clothes

I know you're going to be inviting me and my awesome gifts to your family Hanukah parties. Your kids will LOVE me. I'll show up on housewares night with hangers for everyone!

  • They wouldn't be wire hangers. I've learned from Stacy and Clinton.

Oooh me me me... I could play at this one.  My MIL has bought DH and I so many as-seen-on-tv gifts we could easily play for 10 years.  Seriously, last year alone I got Debbie Meyers fruit bags, a handy grocery bag carrier, mighty putty, some plastic vase that looks very much like a ziploc, and aqua globe plant watering things... I dont remember all the official names sorry.

haha, i'm starting to think your MIL and my dad might somehow be the same person.... between this and loving gross chain restaurants.
