My hair sucks!

It's a nightmare really! It's long, wavy and fine. I can't find any products that are working for the winter here. They either have too much hold or leave my limp hair flying away with static. I'm hating it! It seems to be a constant battle lately. To top it off, it's falling out like crazy too. I'm not sure if it's just because I'm postpartum or because I'm BFing but it's a disaster! Any tips for my crazy hair in the winter weather?

Re: My hair sucks!

  • I also have superfine hair, but it's stick-straight, not wavy.  I have the worst problems with flyaways and static!  These work for me to varying degrees:

Redken No.6 Rewind (in the screw-top tub) - I apply this to wet hair, mostly near the roots, and then comb it through and blow dry.  It leaves my hair really soft and helps quite a bit with volume and flyaways.

Sebastian Potion No.9 - gives me a really nice polished look when I first put it on.  Sometimes on bad hair days I have to reapply later in the day.

Garnier Fructis Smoothing Milk - drugstore substitute for the Sebastian product.  I got it for free and was surprised at how well it worked; usually cheaper products do nothing for me.  I still think it's too lightweight for winter.

  • I can relate. My hair is thin, fine and curly. NO ONE makes products for that kind of hair! Products for thin/fine hair make it frizzy, and products for curly hair all assume that you have thick, coarse hair and weigh it down.

That said, I really like BioSilk, just for the smoothing, anti-static effect - it's very lightweight (you really don't need to use much of it, either) so it doesn't make everything go icky.

Good to know!  I, too, have superfine, stick-straight hair.  In the winter I use Infusium 23 leave-in conditioner.  It really light, so it doesn't weigh my hair down, but it prevents the static I get in dry weather.  And, it's cheap and sold at Target!

OMG, we are hair twins!  Infusium 23 used to be the only shampoo that would work for me, including several pricey salon brands (there's $150 I'll never get back).  Just recently I decided to try Biolage for color-treated hair and it's the best salon brand I've tried so far, but for the price, Infusium 23 can NOT be beat!

  • I had to change my hair routine when I moved from the dryer climate in CA to the more humid one here in OK.  I have naturally curly hair and my trick here has been to use as little leave-in conditioner along with my firm hold mousse to tame my tresses.  That and chopping off about 8 inches!

Oh, and I use a blow-dryer with a diffuser now or else my hair never dries fully (especially at the crown where my curls are tighter and more compact).  I never could use a hair dryer in CA without my hair looking like straw.

I highly recommend www.naturallycurly.com they have protocols for all types of hair with wave and curls, including fine.

As for falling out, that's because your post-partum.  I have noticed I have NO hair in my comb or the shower drain since being pg (which is NOT normal for me) so I am sure it will be coming out in clumps once my LO arrives.

  • You have beautiful hair! Most people would love to have your curl.

Sorry that it is falling out. Seems like the hormones with pregnancy, breastfeeding, and then, going back to regular life has an impact... but, effects us all differently. I had a friend who had her baby a few hours before mine. We compared everything throughout our pregnancies and after. Her hair fell out while she was PG. She was happy once her little girl was born and her hair was back to normal. Mine was like yours, falling out after, which sounds the most common. Mine was super thick to begin with, so I was glad that ponytail holders and clips all fit better. However, it was odd to have such huge wads of hair come out in the shower. Mine continued for months... which I liked less and less. I cut mine to the tops of my shoulders. Much better!

I agree with the pp about www.naturallycurly.com  It's great to find styling products and tips from people with the same hair. Mine isn't fine like yours, so I need products with lots of weight and oil. I can tell you to avoid pomade, b/c that works well for me. Have you ever tried Matrix Biolage finishing spritz? It works well for my best friend who has hair that looks similar wavy/curly and fine. She also got a lot more volume and better curl pattern by going shorter.

  • no suggestions as i have super thick hair, but I do know it's a normal post partum change...at first i thought it was right after birth but then i read on another board it usually happens a few months pp so that sounds like what is going on w/you right now.  sorry! it's not something i look fwd to either

This is a great idea for the OP! I tried looking there a while back, but product recommendations (which was what I was really after) didn't help me much since a lot of products are either not sold in Australia or renamed for the market here. Sad

  • Hair falling out is normal :)  I have THICK (like a horse tail) straight, well now a little wavy in parts thanks to pregnancy.  My products still make it a frizz ball (Biolage), so my new toy is a Chi hair straightener. Love it!  I dont use it all the time, but is has helped get it stick straight and smooth again.  I wonder if you just took a flat iron and quickly go over it, if it would take the frizz/static out?

  • yikes sarah i can so relate to the whole hair problem situation....mine is just now getting back to normal, going off the pill-endocrine problems made it look horrible and it was falling out in clumps.  my product recommendation although not cheap is rare elements-no silicone, no parabens very natural and you use less-even my hairdresser can't believe how much better my hair has gotten since then.  the product line contains 3  products a shampoo, a conditioner, and an oil that you can use for a deep conditioning pre-shampoo treatment ( i use it alot before i go surfing) the other recommendation-avoid products with sulfate very bad for curl hair-i believe that l'oreal everpur line is sulfate free although it does contain parabens and silicone ( another no no for hair) kiehls has a new line out that is sulfate free also something with sunflower in the name.  the rare elements products have been so amazing that i no longer use any styling products in my hair. hope that helps.
  • Ooh another tip from me...about a year ago I switched from regular shampoo to this cleansing conditioner product called Wen.

It has really helped my hair texture and locks in curls.  I use to to wash and condition my hair and also as a leave-in conditioner/styling aid.  I haven't used their other products though.
