Is this generational?

Opening a file.

To get to a file I go to My Documents or My Computer and navigate from there.

Many of my coworkers will open the program they're intending to use, then go to file > open and search from the file from there.  So if they're looking for a spreadsheet, for example, they'll open Excel and search for the file that way.

I find the second way so strange.

How do you open files?  Do you think it's genearational or just a matter of preference?

  • I open them the way you open them.

  • preference.

     I do half and half.

I HATE how much longer it takes to open a giant excel doc or word doc when you search for it from there.  So usually I go to the program to cut time, now if the programs open, it's easier so I just open it from there.

never do I open something in photoshop or illustrator unless it's open, it takes 3x as long if your not on a souped up computer and even then it can be a pain!

So out of habit, I open the program then open the file.

  • I do both actually. If I know it was the last file I worked on in excel, I'll just open up excel and locate my recent documents. It's usually right there and go ahead and click on it.

Most of the time, I do go straight to my documents and click from there.

I think it's just a matter of preference really, it depends on the program or system user. ;-)

  • I've never seen anyone do it the second way. I use "my recent documents" a lot.
  • If it's not in my recent documents i usually find the file then open it. My computers are beasts and can usually handle a lot and my programs are open 90% of the time.

Honestly, if it's not in my recent documents, I still go find the file and double click, or drag it directly into my program, I rarely got the File>Open route. It's annoying.

  • I do it both ways!
  • For me it depends on the situation.

If the program is not open, I will typically go into My documents and open the file that way.

If the program is open, sometimes I will use the program to open the file.

So, I guess I mostly use My Documents except as Kara noted.  If I do something in PS then I will definitely open PS first.

    This.

  • Geek question!  Just kidding, Andrea.

I do both actually.  Depends on my mood, who's watching me, or what I need.

  • i open the program first, then the file, probably 95% of the time.  by generational, do you mean i'm like an old fogey?  LOL

TJ ALWAYS goes to my computer or whatever you said.  but he is a dorky IT guy.

  • I do it the way you do 90% of the time.

I do think it might be generational though because earlier versions of Windows didn't have that option.

  • Most of the time I open the file by finding it in whatever folder its in.

But if I'm in the program and its in my recent docs list then I'll open it there, otherwise I go to the folder.

If I'm in excel though and I want to open a seperate excel doc and have one of each of my monitors then I open the 2nd doc by opening excel again instead of going through recent docs.
