Thank you Ladies!

Thanks for all the support yesterday in the thread about the defeat of the same-sex marriage bill.  A few of you asked what you can do.  Here is the list of senators and how they voted.  If you're senator happened to vote no on this measure, and you disagree with that, please let him/her know.  Also, if you're senator made the decision in favor of civil rights please thank him/her.  It's very easy to email your senator from the nysenate.gov or even make a quick phone call.  TIA!

Re: Thank you Ladies!

  • Thanks Two.  I'll be emailing shortly.  I'm so disappointed.

  • I sent my Senator (Cathy Young) an email to express my disappointment.  So sorry again Two.
  • Thanks Two for the the list.  I'll be sending out my email this weekend.  I need H to help me compose it.  He is much better with wording. But I am so dissapointed in our state senators. I thought we were at least as good as Iowa!

K thinks we should buy those plastic balls that some people hang from their truck tow hitch and deliver them to the senators with a note that reads "I think you forgot to take these with you when you voted." lol!

  • This is the e-mail I sent Roy McDonald if it helps anyone with wording:

    Senator McDonald:

I wish to express my immense disappointment in your decision to vote "no" on the NY Marriage Equality Bill.  I am a heterosexual, married woman and cannot think of one reason why affording every individual the same rights as I enjoy would have any effect on me, my marriage or my community.

As I am sure you are aware, there are over 1300 rights and protections that come with a marriage license.  By your vote yesterday, you effectively said that same-sex couples should not be entitled to enjoy those same 1300 rights and protections that you and I and every other married individual enjoys.

You missed an opportunity to do what is right--to make sure that all people are treated equally.  I firmly believe that when our state looks back on December 2, 2009 they will be appalled and confused as to how someone could deny another human being fundamental rights.

    Respectfully,

    Your Constituent, Hockeywife

Ugh.  I'm just so disgusted.  PS - I'm sure everyone knows this, but yelling and name calling will not get anyone anywhere for any cause, so I urge everyone who plans to e-mail, call or write to do so in a composed, respectful manner.

  • I sent two yesterday, and am urging others I know to do the same...so so disappointed.

    Great letter, hockeywife.

  • That really is a great letter hockeywife!
  • I emailed my senator yesterday afternoon, too.  Hopefully they will get a lot of letters that will change their minds!

  • I just called Libous to tell him I am disappointed in his vote and specifically requested that someone call me to explain WHY he voted no.

I'm also using Hockey's letter right...now.... to email him!

  • Sorry again Two.  That vote was really terrible.  I will also write.  Hockey's letter is AWESOME.  Nice job!!!
  • Senator McDonald has another email in his inbox.  Thanks for the letter Hockeywife.  That was great.

  • Can I also make a suggestion that people call instead of or in addition to emailing or writing a letter?  Speaking as someone who used to work for an elected official and answered the phones, opened the letters, and checked email- calling is the best.  If they get tons of phone calls in one day, it's more noticed than getting a lot of emails.

  • Ok just called Libous's office and expressed my disappointment- they said he is having prostate surgery next week and I said- well I wish the senator his health and I'm so happy that he can his wife at his bed side while he recovers while this right is denied to hundreds of new yorks same sex couples and due to his decision...( not sure if that's 100% correct but oh well...)

and i used my maiden name- so it should ring a bell (he uses our family dry cleaners in binghamton sometimes- I hope they ruin his shirts!!)

Awesome Abba.  I think you, J, and K delivering balls would be hysterical!  The image makes me LOL!

  • Thanks for the info. Two!  I will be calling tomorrow!

  • Senator Robach just got an email from me! :) And I used my school email as his son went there!
  • If I was still in NY, I'd definitely be calling.  DC has partially passed a same sex marriage bill, and, last I knew, it was one round of voting away from being finalized, so there's hope down here!
