C&P - Feeling Kind of Down

I am in a Biggest Loser competition at work.  As of two weeks ago, I was in first place.  It runs through December 23, and I thoroughly cannot wait to kick some CWs' butts!! (Some of them I REALLY don't like so victory would be so thoroughly sweet!)

Also two weeks ago (today), is when I messed up my back.

At this point, I need to give a virtual shout-out to my chiropractor.  I went to Urgent Care and the Dr gave me two prescriptions, saw me for all of 2 minutes, and sent me on my way.  After NO improvement and near complete bedrest five days later, I called my chiropractor and I can happily say a week later, I can walk upright.  I'm 90% better and feel pretty good overall.  I still have to see him because my lower back isn't 100% and he can feel that when he adjusts me.

But I'm not cleared to workout yet.  The chiropractor said today I can "do some light walking on the treadmill" (which is HUGE progress) and if I still feel ok tomorrow, a little more "light walking" tomorrow, but cannot workout until I'm pain-free for 3 days.

I get where he's coming from and he was so empathetic about it.  I was in AGONY 2 weeks ago.  He's trying to make sure I don't reinjure myself.  I'm totally on board with that plan.  But it's SO FRUSTRATING and painstaking to go from running ~10 miles a week, biking ~2 hours a week, and lifting weights 2-3 times a week to NOTHING.

And then to see the scale go up and know I have just under 3 weeks until the competition ends... Sad  I know it's just a stupid competition and my pride.  But I NEVER see something through, so it was a big deal to me to commit to this competition and stick to it.  Also the crazy ex-friend I work with is in the competition, and I will be SO DEFEATED and depressed if she "beats" me or is anywhere NEAR me in the competition - I was totally dominating it!

  • I'm sure you will come back full force and kick some co-worker booty.  but your chiro is right - you will probably reinjure yourself if you aren't completely healed and that would be very very bad.  Take your small victory (walking on the treadmill) and go with it.  You will be ok!

  • Don't beat yourself up about an injury that you didn't want!  I can see how difficult it is since you are such a competitive person, but I have a feeling you will pull out a win even in the condition you are in.  How GOOD would that feel!?
  • I agree with Jen, it's an injury you have no control over. I think its a better idea to make sure you are fully healed before you do anything strenious, although I know it's frustrating. Once you are back at 100% you will be more motivated than ever! This is just a temporary set back and you will get past it and kick butt.

I kind of know where you are coming from, before fertility treatments and pregnancy I was spinning and running a few times a week. Now I am only allowed to walk and I only do that when I don't feel like crap. Plus the food I am eating isn't always the best because I eat what doesn't make me feel worse. So I feel huge. Sorry not to make this about me I just want to let you know I sympathize.

  • That really stinks Paula.  It sounds like your chiropractor is wonderful and truly has your best interest in mind.  Not like that dr. at the urgent care.  You didn't ask for this to happen, and while I know that doesn't make you feel better, it was something you didn't have control over.  I think that if you do what he is telling you to do, you will be able to start working out soon and I have complete confidence you will win the competition.  I remember some of the stories you have told about some cw's and I want you to kick butt and win the competition.  But your health is more important.  :)

  • IT sucks that you are feeling this way but in the end your back is more imporatant right now.  The fact that you still have the drive and desire to work out speaks miles.  Most people in your shoes, would have given up already.  You are still raring to go.

  • I know it's got to be disappointing not being able to compete like you know you can.  I definitly wouldn't push a back problem.  I know lots of people that have bad back problems and they say how bad they are.
