Put an offer on a house... I think

A house down the street is on the market. Not sure the exact story, but it's lender-owned, and is a steal. We do know it was involved in a drug-bust about a year ago. And it does need some work. Like the random, well-cut holes in the walls & floors. We're assuming from the police looking for stashes.

We originally were looking at it to fix up as another rental property. But once we got the tour, now we're thinking we'd like to move into it, and rent out the house we're living in now.

Anyway...

I've never bought a house before, and we filled out all this paperwork, and I was supposed to drop it off at the realty office (Huff) this morning, along with a check for $1000.
I thought it was just an offer for them to take to the bank. But the assistant at Huff started asking me if we were gonna move in before Christmas, and congratulations on our new house, and enjoy our new home, etc, etc.

So now I'm wondering if the bank already accepted our offer???? I don't know. And DH is in a meeting so I can't call him yet to find out if he knows anything.

Oh well. I guess I just have to wait & see. I'm excited to find out though. Either way. I hate being in limbo.

  • Well Congratulations either way!!

I don't want to be a Debbie downer, but if I were you I would check to see if you can find out what type of drugs were being sold out of that house. If they were just stashing some pot or coke or something in there then no biggie, but if they were making meth in the basement or something crazy like that I would think again about moving in there. I just watched a special on one of the news channels about people moving in to houses where they had been making meth and the new owners didn't know and they ended up with serious medical conditions.

Hopefully that isn't the case here and you won't have to worry about any of that! Good luck on the entire process!!

  • Congratulations!

I agree, make sure the house was not a meth lab.  That would not be good for your health no matter how much clean up and renovation you do to it.

If the house is a bank owned, I really doubt that they got an answer back that quickly.  Bank owned are faster than a short sale to get offer approval, but it does take them a few days.  Most have more than one offer coming in at a time, and they have to consider all of them before accepting an offer.  It sounds like your realtor is a little over confident.  He may know that your offer looks good on paper, and the contract/earnest money deposit is binding if the offer is accepted.

  • Hmm, you sign your life away when you buy a house.  I think I signed paperwork for over an hour at closing.  Was this just an offer and ernest money?  if so then the person at the office is getting a little ahead of his/her self.

  • Yeah, I don't think it was meth.

They let the mom & kid live there after the initial bust (dad never came back home). From what we've heard, they were dealing mostly in prescription drugs.

It was crazy drama when the bust happened. Nice middle class family. Quiet subdivision. And it wasn't just the local police. The DEA was running the show. They took their truck, their boat, and a ton of stuff from inside the house. And we never saw the dad again.
  • Congratulations of finding a house you like! I know you've been anxious to have a home that you and your H got together rather than living in the house he and his ex were in. I hope this works out well for you.

Sounds as if you have only put in the offer as of yet and that the assistant at Huff is being very optimistic.

Good luck! I hope you hear good news soon.
