Any reviews on FWISD

We may move to Fort Worth, any comments on Lowery Road and/or Atwood McDonald Elementary.

Re: Any reviews on FWISD

  • Greatschools.net has some reviews you can look at. Judging on test scores alone, both schools are "Academically Acceptable," which to be honest is below average for an elementary school. Basically means just barely passing.

Not that it would be the end of the world to send them there, but if it were me (although I'm probably the pickiest school picker there is, and I don't even have children yet!) I would look for other options. If you're moving for a job, is it possible to move into a neighboring ISD with a better school system?

  • From what I've been told by a number of people here in Fort Worth who have kids, the only really good elementary school is Tanglewood Elementary.

The public schools here in FW aren't that great, from what I hear. A lot of people I go to church with and have worked with either live in suburb areas in order to have better schools or send their kids to private school.

  • Some of the FW schools rock and some don't. There are several really great elementary schools that have open enrollment for transfers within the city and the parents line up the night before to get their kid in. At least in FW you have that option.

Honestly, I've never heard of either school you mentioned and I know kids in the majority of the FW schools (and have been inside most of them for programs/lunches/etc). May just be an area that I don't know anyone that lives in.

I can tell you that I know people who move just for their kid to attend Paschal, or stop attending Country Day or another private school and transfer there for high school. We live in Crowley ISD and would move to have our kid in that school if we live here long enough. Fort Worth does have some great educational opportunities within in - you have to do your homework.

  • We just recently sold DH's house at 30 and Cooks Lane (which is just south of Lowery Road Elementary).  I don't know much about the schools (other than I've heard FWISD is horrible) but I'd be very careful before buying in that area.  It's got a very high crime rate!  The lady accross the street from us got robbed at gunpoint in her driveway at 11 AM on a Sunday morning....this was the last straw and why DH decided to sell.  My car got broken into, our next door neighbors caught someone breaking into our storage shed in the backyard, and a drunk driver ran into the neighbors car at 2 AM (he lived down the street).  The Wal Mart in that area (30 and Eastchase) has two police officers on duty at all times and they park their squad car in the very front between the two entrances to let people know they are there.  Also, the neighboorhood was brand new when DH built his house in 2003 but it has gone way down hill since then.  People don't take care of their homes and DH's property value went down 30K over those 5 years.  You can email me if you want more details....dyerlindsayn   at gmail

  • I live not too far from this but in Arlington, on 20 and Green Oaks - almost Kennendale.

If you are set on being in this area look further south. Our neighborhood is older, but I feel very safe and love all of our neighbors. We are in the Arlington ISD, Martin High School.

  • I would not live anywhere near 30 and Eastchase. Sorry =(
  • I rarely post here, but I live in a gated community that feeds into Lowery Road. Honestly, there is no way my child will be attending that school. I know a few teachers who used to work there, and it's not a school I would put my child in. However, just a couple of miles north you get into the HEB and Birdville districts, and there are a lot of private schools nearby. Good luck with your move!

Thanks for the stories, we will be looking elsewhere.

  • its all based on the area of Fort Worth that you choose to live in. East Fort Worth would not be my ideal place to live or schools my children would attend. I have a 9 yo that is attending a FWISD school and it's excellent, but we live in a good neighborhood and even though not far from us is a Section 8 housing, there are a lot of children from there that attend the school as well. I'm a product of FWISD schools and while it's not the same as it was when I attended, it's not horrible. its all about the schools that you have to attend.
