Do you work at OSU?

I was wondering how hard it is to get into an administrative position with OSU...And do you like your careers there?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Do you work at OSU?

  • I do work at OSU and have since Dec 2003.  Getting in can be really, really tough, but you just have to keep applying for positions that you're qualified for.  Just remember that most positions get TONS of applicants, so you need to have good cover letters and things to get considered.

I love working here.  The benefits are pretty good--I love the paid time off policies most of everything, I think.  I love the fact that we can take classes for next to nothing (have a pay a few fees) and that when DH and I have kids, if we're both still working here, we get a 75% discount on tuition (50% for just one parent working at OSU).

  • Thanks so much for posting! So is the best way to apply through the website?
  • I worked full-time at Ohio State for four years (I just left at the end of August to move out of state). I got my Masters degree for practically free because I worked and went to school part-time...I personally thought the education benefits were the best part of working at the university. Plus, I know my office was incredibly flexible about me leaving for school related meetings and classes.  The health benefits are also good, with a variety of plans and options to pick from.

The website is the only way to apply for jobs at Ohio State. Like Allison said, make sure your cover letter and resume are really really good. It can be tough to get in, but once you are in as an employee, it is much easier to move within the university.  Internal candidates are always considered before external candidates regardless of the job.
  • I work at OSU as well.  As was mentioned, it is very hard to get in.  I applied for probably 30 jobs before I was hired (and on top of that the job I was hired for I was very qualified for along with having made contacts in the department).  There were some 150 applicants for most jobs I applied to (some of the departments would send letters out letting you know you aren't chosen and then they give you the population you were up against).  My advice is to be persistent, network if possible to give yourself an "in", and work on any skill sets you can to make yourself more marketable.  I am a career adivsor here at OSU, if you want, I'd be more than happy to look at your resume-that is a lot of people's first problem.  Email me at rachel.kaschner@gmail.com if you would like.
