BR- check your insurance re:breastpump if DC has to stay in the hospital a little longer

I thought I would post this just in case it may help.  When Kai was born he had jaundice really bad and had to stay in the NICU for an additional 5 days.  Our insurance covered the cost of my breast pump ($300) because we were 'separated' ( I was still there all day, every day).  I had NO idea this was even an option with our insurance (Blue Shield) and only learned after reading it in a post from someone else months before he was even born.  Just something to maybe check on with your insurance in case you are faced with the situation of coming home before your DC.  That way you are armed with info.  In my case, it just required a Dr's note for a breast pump saying DS had to remain in the hospital. I bought the dang pump, submitted my receipt, with a letter and a note and the check arrived shortly after. I was amazed! I do hope none of you are faced with that situation though.

  • My lactation consultant said that our insurance might cover the cost of our one month pump rental due to me being "engorged" and it being "medically necessary." Not sure yet, still have to submit it...

  • Good tip!  I've already checked with my insurance and HSA and both will only cover a breast pump if it deemed "medically necessary" and not just for convenience.  I am hoping I can get a note from my doctor too.
  • This is good to know.  I hope we can still get a retroactive refund (if we qualify) since I just purchased one on sale and it's months and months before the due date!
