Male Stubbornness

Do any of you have any difficulty getting your DH to go to a doctor?  My mom is struggling with getting my dad to go, and now I'm at a loss with my DH.  He has lower back issues that I'm sure could probably be helped by a round or two of physical therapy.  If he walks for more than 20 minutes without sitting or resting, his lower back starts hurting, which limits what we can do.

Ideas?

Re: Male Stubbornness

  • ugh YES!!! he hates the doctor and the dentist. I have to make apts for him and make sure he actually goes. He has really bad back problems too and our friend is a chiropractor. I had to make his apt and everything and finally he went. He was really happy and more comfortable when he got home. I thought it would make him less scared about going but he's still the same way!

I always tell him he is a whiny baby. Girls are so much stronger than guys, I dont care what anyone says!

  • H is very bad about going to the dr. Hates it even. He would much rather do homiopathic stuff, which is ok, but it only works if you know whats wrong, and to know whats wrong you need to go to the dr to get a diagnosis!

For a while his excuse was not having insurance, but I've added him to mine. Before the wedding I told him that as soon as he gets the card he is going to the dr (he has an issue that has been around for at least 2 years and we haven't gotten any aswers from the clinics & low income places we've gone). H does well with time frames. So I told him after his card came in that he had 2 weeks to call & make an appt or I would do it for him.

Have you tried the future appeal? Like if you want to have kids he's gonna wanna go out and play with them, and kids aren't gonna wanna sit and rest every 20 minutes. It'd be easier for him to get better before the kids arrive. Sorry if that doesn't really help your situation. I've learned with my H that there are certain things I can push him on and other I can't.

  • Same here! And DH is a very reasonable and responsible person in every other aspect of his life. What worked for me was saying "we pay for the insurance and have great doctors, we may as well use them!" Silly boys. Wink

  • All the time! I would have to like bribe him. He finally got a check-up and once he was really sick and I forced him to go. He still has YET to go to the dentist though. He had a bad experience with the dentist when he was younger...then after years of smoking a dipping (he stopped everything 4 years ago) his teeth are like rotting. He promised me he would go before the wedding, then he lost his insurance so he never went (not that I thought he would go anyway). He is terrified the dentist is going to say he has the worst teeth ever and is embarrassed. I told him there are way worth teeth out there but he won't listen. He said he wants to wait till they all fall out so he can get new ones lol...UGH!

  • LoL, I'm glad I'm not the only one.  Why do they have to be so stubborn???

    Grr.

  • Thirty years in June and he still waits until something falls off to go.  Fortunately, once he gets there, they take over making him followup appointments.
My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!
  • Oh my goodness yes!  My Dad is a dentist and it took me saying "Please make an appointment to get your teeth cleaned - it is free!" to get him to go for a cleaning.  Hubby also has a strange mole on his back that I've been bugging him about having checked for i'm not kidding YEARS.  I finally convinced him to go by telling him I have extra Flex Account $$ that has to get used by the end of the year or else I'll lose it and I'd rather spend it on something we need rather than a zillion boxes of bandaids.  :)
  • I wish the free part would work for my DH. I think he is just too scared to go!!! He can go play around on top of planes all day fixing and de-icing them but he can't go to a dentist or doctor???

  • Usually if I make the appointment for him and tell him he HAS to go he will.  Until then he just insists that he's perfectly healthy.
