BR: Jumperoo

DH and I were thinking about what to get Brooke for Christmas this year ... something small(er) bc. we know our parents will spoil the sh!t out of her and she will receive a lot of toys/clothes from aunties/uncles/etc...

I started looking on amazon and found this:
Fish Price Jumperoo
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I2UJ0Q/ref=s9_k2a_gw_ir01?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-7&pf_rd_r=0BFTWPK9G6DEDJEJXVSZ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938451&pf_rd_i=507846

It received FIVE STARS based on 649 reviews! (The last toy I bought based on amazon reviews was her Sophie that she absolutely loves)

However I brought up the jumperoo to the pediatrician during her 6 month checkup and the pedi. doesn't recommend getting any toys like the jumperoo or those that allow babies to bear weight on their legs because it might lead to bowl-leggedness. Has anyone heard of this?

A bunch of my friends' childrens have played in jumperoos and it's not like we would leave her in there for long periods of time... if the pediatrician hadn't said anything about it, I would have just gone ahead and bought it but now I'm second-guessing the purchase...

What do you think? Should I listen to my peditrician or just buy the darn thing since so many babies obviously love it (and majority of them are NOT bowl-legged)?

Re: BR: Jumperoo

  • Jaylee actually has the precious planet jumperoo. image She loves it and has been using it since she was just shy of 4 months. My pedi said it was okay but to not leave her in there for tooo long. (She's usually in there for 15 minutes or so, so we can wash dishes, or put in a load of laundry)  SHE LOVES it and it's pretty cool to see her move around. I would go with what you feel is right. Different pedi's have different beliefes on things.. Go with your gut..
  • Thanks Lesley! Usually it wouldn't be such a big deal for me, but my pediatrician makes me paranoid about certain things (I'm starting to question her, actually. . . )

Anyway, have you bought Jaylee a Sophie yet? That little toy is great! (even though it's pretty much a dog toy) :-/

  • I don't have any helpful opinions for you on the jumperoo.  Almost all my friends have a jumperoo type toys and LOVE them.  I thought they were helpful in developing muscles?  I'm interested to hear what some of the other mommies think.

In regards to the Sophie.  I wonder why babies love them so much?

  • I actually personally know a few people who are bow-legged (and one of them had to get knee surgery to fix it). From what they told me at least, it's mainly hereditary and also from spending long-term in certain bow-legged positions (for example, the person who got the knee surgery rode horses a lot). This is the first time that I heard that these jumperoo type toys causes them bow-leggedness...

  • We got Ashton the Rainforest one and he loves it too...I just read that all this talk about babies being bowleged from standing while holding onto mom's or dad's hands and using these jumperoo's are not true. It seems to be coming up more and more.  It's so weird you just brought this up since I just read about it last night..too weird!!
  • I think if you use it wisely, its not an issue. I am super cautious and obsessive about Marino's development. Our physical therapist gave us the ok to use it for up to 20 minutes a day (common sense will tell you not to leave the baby in it for an hour anyway). We ended up not using it after a few months b/c he developed a habit of always standing tip-toed if you stood him up. We couldn't figure out if there was a correlation (I'm going with no, since he kept doing that long after he forgot all about the jumperoo ever existing) so we stopped using it. But he is definately not bow-legged and walks, run, marches, jumps perfectly fine! I will use it again if we have another baby!

I think she's great for teething. She's soft and has long legs the baby can put further in their mouth than other toys to get the back teeth. Marino has been chewing on her for a year now! If his teeth really hurt, I put her in the fridge first. He hardly liked any teething toys, but he LOVES Sophie. Now he uses her for pretend play, too.

  • Thanks for the advice everyone :)

Oh, and can I just mention how adorable Marino is?! He looks like a little pimp in his outfit!!!

  • Sorry that I'm so late to comment but Sean Patrick had a jumperoo and LOVED it!  He was also on tip toes while using it although I think all kids do that (once they are flat-footed, the instructions say to take them out of it).

Here's a little video that DH put together of the first couple times SP used his jumperoo (make sure your sound is on):  http://spboland08.blogspot.com/2009/02/baby-jumps.html

    :)

  • Chiming in a bit late here:

We got DD the jumperoo when she was almost 5 months old, but she didn't really enjoy it until she was about 8 months old. Our pedi said they were okay to use, as long as it was not for a prolonged amount of time, which I doubt you would do anyway. I think your DD will be perfectly fine :)
