Oh boy...New chapter begins.

My dd "started" today.  Tongue Tied  I knew it was coming, but I just wanted her to stay a little girl forever! lol  I figured we had until summer at least.  Poor thing started crying when she tried to tell me.  I felt so bad for her, she was embarrased and said she didn't want it to happen yet.  We were on our way to Walmart when she told me, so we went in and pick up some supplies.  She didn't want to look, but I told her we would just pretend that we were getting it for me.  Then I got her snazzy little purse to keep her "supplies" in for school.  That made her happy. lol  Women can be so easy to please when it comes to accessories! hehe

Re: Oh boy...New chapter begins.

  • ahhh... just waiting for the day when SD 'starts'.  We think it's soon, though!  Watch it happen when she's with us vs. her BM.

Wow... Did you give her the 'you're a woman' story?  Poor girl-crying about it... Aw!

  • Awww, that's a bitter sweet moment for sure. Nice touch with getting her the purse.
  • Ugh!  How awful.  I remember the day that I started and it was terrible.  Sobbing, crying, embarrassment....the whole works.  I can't imagine being a mommy to a "woman" already.  But good for you for making the best of it.
  • Oh man, I remember that day.  I was in denial about it for a few hours lol.  I had the hardest time telling my mom.  I recall tears were involved.  It made it worse that my mom was so excited about it AND shared it with my dad!!  GAH!!  Talk about embarrassing moments.

That's very sweet to get her the new purse, that's a great idea to make it all ok!

  • Ah poor girl.  My mom was on a business trip when it happened and my sisters were both at college.  I called my mom in tears and she had to call my stepdad back and tell him "go get pads, and put them in the bathroom, and DO NOT mention this to Rachel at all."  It sucked.

  • Omg, such a hard time. I seriously never told my mom. I just took care of it myself . . . I was really really private as a kid. She just sort of noticed the supplies were missing and assummed.

Oh AND I got mine AFTER my younger sister. She's two years younger than me and she got her period a year before I did. Poor girl.

  • I remember when I got mine, I had to take care of it myself because mommie dearest couldn't care less.  I had already knew all about it from the class we had taken in 5th grade and her talk to attempted to have with me earlier in the year that I did get it.  I remember that as well, we were watching The Cosby Show and it was the episode where Rudy got her period, like I said, I knew about it prior but my parents didn't know I knew, so I played stupid and said "What's a period?" and my Dad looked at my Mom and said "That's your job not mine" so she said "Come with me, I have a present for you" so I got all excited thinking it really was a present, nope all she showed me were pads and tampons and had "the talk" with me, till I finally stopped her and admitted I already knew all about it.
  • I was 13 when i got mine - so it wasn't too tragic.  i have an older sister so my mom gave us the "period talk" at the same time so I knew it was coming.  She did call the aunts and grandmas to tell them it happened.

The only thing I really hated were the pads.  ugh.  My mom had heavy ones for herself and just assumed I needed to wear the super thick diaper for my light flow.  After 2 years of that I finally begged to be allowed to wear tampons instead.

  • Such a fun time in life :P. It sounds like you handled her stress really well, though :). I didn't get mine 'til I was 14, so I wasn't freaked out at all. I was starting to wonder why I hadn't yet. . . And my little sis didn't get hers 'til 16 because the girl had no body fat.

This was me.  I was super skinny in high school and didn't get it until my junior year when I was 16.  I was at the point that I really wanted it so that nothing was wrong with me and sick of my friends making fun of me for not having it.

  • awwwwwwwwwwe poor thing :(

I got mine in the summer of 5th going into 6th...so luckily I had just had the class about it. Each girl got a brown box delivered to her house, and inside was a bunch of different types of pads and tampons.

I shoved all the tampons up our bathroon sinks faucet and turned the water on until all the tampons got to huge and came out. haha I thought it was hilarious. My mom, not so much.

My sis, too. And now we all wish we could have waited to get it until right before we are ready to have kids!

  • Yeah, I'd say it went pretty well.  I don't remember when I first started.  I know it was my 7th grade year, so 12 or 13.  We had had the talk a few times, and I was just praying it didn't happen while she was with her dad in North Carolina last summer! lol  So we are both relieved it was now.
  • Definitely good that she got it while she was with you and not her dad!

I got mine two days after my 12th birthday - I remember calling my mom into the bathroom to make sure that's what it was, and it was okay after that...except of course, she had to tell the grandparents (we did live with them). That was awkward. We'd had the talk, but when I was nine, and I was the oldest. I think I was one of the first in my 6th grade class, but I can't remember for sure.

  • I hated any embarassing conversations with my mom.  It was much easier to stomach the conversation in school and read my little playtex pamphlet.

So, I fully intend to start telling Scarlett about it WAY in advance (pre-embarassment) so that she's just expecting it and not dreading it.  I'm going to be one of those parents that make sure she knows the proper names for things and what they do.

So if your kids come home from school saying "uterus" before you intended for them to know that word, you can blame me.

I love it! I think kids should know the proper names for body parts. And I think it's hysterical when my niece (4 y/o) says things like "mommy, my vulva is itchy" while they're in public.
